I just saw this video and the first thing it made me think of was the Withering.

That must be the next phase. Parasitic fungi infections and people exploding in Mistlocke spreading the pathogen to the whole populace until the town is just a large clump of fleshshrooms.

I can see it already. It is not a pretty sight.
