Never-Again

First of all, I would like to say that I have in the past been the worst at the rage quit. I would have an interesting character that was developing a plot line nicely, die to some random NPC on a quest and that was it. Two week break from EfU, character abandoned. End of Story.

To help break this cycle (as much as I can) a couple of things had to happen.

- I had to accept that most likely my character would die at some point. This is not PvP goodness, this is a simple death to a quest or perhaps a mob attack. Its much easier when it happens, if you accept it can happen right up front.

- I had to break the fundamental way I viewed success. Success is not based on level, items, or gear. Those are some nice perks, sure. But success in my mind is artfully playing a character to the best of your ability through whatever happens to that character. Ending a story line because random orc 1234 kills you isn't a good way to go.

- I had to come up with a long term goal for my character. Something they could always be working towards regardless of what happened to them in character. Found an order, discover a secret, escape from the something, ect. This way no matter what level they were, how many DM created items they lost, or how many allies died the character always has something to work towards.

- I had to realize that one of things that makes EfU so much fun is that it -is- challenging. If it was easy to accomplish everything, there is not much satisfaction in it. If you accept that, you also have to accept that you will fail at times. Die, miss getting the item, ect. You cant have one without the other.

- I had to have an idea for my next character. Sooner or latter something would happen that will end the current character. I put a lot of thought and time into my characters and -HATE- it when they die. The way to ease that was to have the idea for the next one well fleshed out. Then, if my current character died I knew what I was going to try next. It helped.

These were some of the ways I found helped me avoid the rage quit. I hope it helps others.

Most importantly, he found the Order! Join the Numinous brotherhood, and see your characters flourish, even in death!!!

Seriously though, as one guilty of the random death ending a few promising characters, the post is some of the best advice you can receive.

Exactly, its too much of a shame to have such a well thought up PC thrown away out of anger. I admit i have have done this alot, and have always regret it.
Nice post.

I think a rage quit is almost a right of passage. Everyone has to do at least one, it's the problem of playing a game where you grow to become so connected to a character.
