Improved Unarmed Strike

So my mechanics question is this:

Is improved unarmed strike worth a damn if you're not a monk?

I'm trying to get a guy that likes to bare-knuckle box.  It's not his only thing, so I'm only wasting one feat on it.

But would improved unarmed strike, give me attacks of opportunities against an unarmed opponent that does not have this feat?

If not, could someone enlighten me on this feat in a mechanical manner.  I can read the description in the book, so don't necessarily need that quoted back at me.

Thanks.

If you plan on fighting with your fists and you don't get this feat, it's pretty much an exploit. Gauntlets with damage attached to them don't incur AOOs.

ok... didn't answer my questions....

I am thinking of a bar-brawler. It is not his only thing, just a part of his personality, get drunk - fight. You know the guy, we all do. Hell it's probably you Thomas, regardless, in "real" fights, he will use weapons, etc.

So my original question is truely, only for boxing, not a primary mode of fighting bad-guys, etc?

Any "Real" insight is appreciated.

Apologies!

Improved unarmed strike would indeed stop AOOs, and would be truthfully an addition to any bar-brawler concept.

Sorry mate, I need to start reading the entire post. :)

thanks and no worries.

its hard to get the ideal of sarcasim and joking through on a post. After i re-read what I wrote, It didn't come out as light-hearted as I intended.

i get the stop AOO's for my guy (who has the feat), but what about the opponent (who does not have the feat)  will he incur AOO's because I have it, and he does not?

I created a straight rogue that, instead of weapons, used her fists. Surprisingly, it was very effective. You can rely on your sneak attack to help boost the damage from not having a weapon, but the real trick is if you can get a pair of gloves or gauntlets with bonus damage on them.

In truth, fighting unarmed has its own benefits. Obviously you can't be disarmed. If you need to strike suddenly, you don't need to give away your intentions by drawing a weapon. Also, it's really fun to roleplay out a brawler in the a swordfight.

Wow... I did not notice this.. I have been exploiting that for every bar fight I've gotten into on Thor. Good thing I got rid of my Slashing Damage Gloves... Jeeze. o_o

Thank the Gods I know now.

There's actually no way around it AFAIK. Even without bonus damage gloves you don't incur AoOs.

If you're playing an outstanding brawler(Non-Monk) concept and your character has the feats for it, the DMs do notice, and do tend to reward it.

if you're playing X and rock out, we will notice and we tend to reward for it

so the actual answer to my question, is that no-one has a clue?

No, it would not. If you are unarmed and fighting an armed opponent they get AoO against you each time you attack. Taking this feat cancels out the AoO you would suffer. It doesn't do anything for you against unarmed opponents.

NWN WIKI is an excellent overall resource for these sorts of questions.
