New Perk Styles

The reason I'm suggesting this in a new thread is that I'm suggesting a new form rather than just random cool perks (read: it gets more attention this way)

I would like to see more perks that lets certain classes do things that certain other classes can do. Specifically things relating to the cool nature systems added to help out those people who want to be au natural and not depend on certain classes.

My first suggestion is for Tracker, in which any PC class can track using exactly the same system as a Ranger/Druid. Considering what other perks can be given up for this, I wouldn't consider it overpowered and would help a lot of characters who it makes perfect IC sense to be able to track but have no levels in Ranger so cannot.

My second is for Plant Lover, in which a non-Druid / Ranger can tell what's left in a plant as well as a Druid/ Ranger can (maybe make a Ranger taking it mean he's as good as a Druid). Again, to help nature friendly non-ranger/druid PCs do alchemy and herbalism without risking pulling down the forest.

Although I admit these are the only two perks I've come up with, perhaps PCs with more knowledge of systems similar to these could mention similar ones. It's a shame to see such cool systems be so limiting when we've got such an awesome way to implement them!

I think, considering that only one perk per character is allowed, and that all choices are permanent, this would be a positive thing, and I do not see how allowing, for example, a pure fighter to take Tracking, would be a bad thing.

The chief thing I like about it, is that it would actually increase the variety of viable and interesting builds among PCs, and cut down on nonsensical multi-classes.

What I mean, is that I am wholly in support of the two perk suggestions so far. Other ideas elude me presently, unfortunately.

Bardic Lore Bonus thing, +1 lore every level.

Kotenku has a point, but I am not fond of giving tracking to non-nature classes at all. Fewer absurd multiclasses would be great but 1) I do not think anybody actually multiclasses for tracking, and 2) I like my sweet rangers to remain sweet rangers and not just sweet fighters with a particular perk.

These are my personal views, of course.

Because dual-wielding, spells, favored enemy and animal companions aren't sweet and ranger-specific? Not for or against, jus' sayin'.

AntoninD'Erlon

You mean your sweet rangers with divine wands, a large AB bonus against favored enemies, the best stealth possible, detection, and full BAB?

I'm pretty sure that tracking isn't a problem in that list. However I agree that some things need to remain unique to classes.

Considering the other perks there are, I don't imagine any random fighter would choose tracking purely to be more powerful. There are other better perks, leaving this one for people who actually incorporate the fact that they're trackers without being rangers

(Think Barbarians who want to fully incorporate the fact they live in the wilds, Clerics of Malar that want to show they HUNT, etc.)

That random fighter picking it to be more powerful would probably be 8 int IRL, as all the skills associated with it are cross classed, which means they'll not be tracking so much as a boar any time soon without a ton of magic items with boosts to the three skills.

But yes, clerics of Malar or barbarians with track ftw.

I did.

More on topic.

I agree with the suggestion. I think the point of perks is to be seen, and things such as tracking that are used often are usually noticable more than, say, having 10 Temporary HP every time one rests. A PC with the plant lover perk would also be seen wandering the wilds, looking for plants more often, etc.

I did too, actually.
