I wonder...

I've only ever had it work on druid characters. Any other character, even if I manage the skill checks, it simply fails to give the reward.

It used to work for my characters, but hasn't recently with my current ranger. You pass the AE and Heal tests, get to the "continue" point in the conversation and it ends there without completion.
