Concealment on small creatures.

In lieu of this thread, I'd like to raise another point.

I think concealment (not necessarily 50%) on the bug swarms makes sense. Not only do swarms of bugs look nearly immaterial, making them difficult things to target, but they also, effectively, feel immaterial--meaning making contact with them with a weapon might not necessarily produce any results.

However, I don't think this can be said of other small creatures such as bats or sand spiders. The difficulty in hitting these things is (or should be) represented by the bonus to their AC from dexterity, dodge, and small stature. Even more importantly, the concealment mechanic, in comparison to the AC vs. AB mechanic, is purely luck based and totally disregards the skills of who or whatever is attacking them. The 50% concealment bonus represents the fact that you have a one in two chance of targetting the real target, I don't think it should be used to represent a creature's size or grace.

I really think the DMs should revisit and reconsider this.

It will make blindfight and area spells more important for these quests, changing perhaps the way in which they are commonly done.

However I'd like to see the bugs made into a background graphic which makes attack rolls rather than have a physical presence, so that actually the team isn't blocked by them and can move freely through them.  Over the course of the quest the damage and poison chances increase, making it more urgent to hurry and finish.

Small insect clouds shouldn't be hittable with weapons at all, and shouldn't be able to block movement either.

BoomdaddyBP

I might be incorrect, but I think you now can run through them.

I'm opposed to this idea, as it justifies rushing through quests to just finish them instead of spending a little time on a quest, however simple it may be, to get some RP in.

It would be possible to have the creatures in question have the "ghost" effect (or something similarly named) that causes it to be ignored for collisions with other creatures.

They already have DR (or at least, Larva Swarms do) as part of something I think I was doing to replicate 4th Edition swarm rules. Concealment + DR would really, really suck.

Ebok

They currently have concealment 50% and DR.
You can currently run through them.

Listen in Silence

I am very, very much against the idea of concealment on bats and small spiders, for reasons similar to Caster's.

QuoteThe aim was not to slow down people more as to make it so that PC can move through them (They do not have 1.69 collision anymore).

The 50% concealment is an unforeseen side-effect of this and will be tweaked until the right effect is achieved.

I answered that in another topic.
