Magical Quivers

Ranged weapons can be immensely powerful on EFU. With a magical bow, it becomes possible to shoot down targets before they even become threats. Not to mention the extremely simple monster AI often makes ranged attacks exploitable. And in PvP, combined with a natural speed buff, ranged weapons can be invincible.

It is no surprise that really good ranged weapons are only given out by DMs. And even when they are, they’re often lacklustre in design. They don’t compare to the creativity of many melee weapons. And how can they be? Allot of what makes a bow unique goes into what arrows you shoot. But the unlimited arrow options for bows are generally too powerful for EFU. I mean, Unlimited 1d6 cold damage arrows? And how often can you give out the same +1 attack bonus before it becomes stale? Of course there is magical ammunition. But no matter how strong you make a few arrows, they’ll be gone in moments. And for good reason, there are never enough.

So DMs are often limited to not giving out magical ranged weapons, because there is a very thin line between a tasteful and interesting bow, and a complete, over-the-top bow that out-does any melee fighter.

That’s why I suggest EFU adds Magical Quivers. Imagine a medium sized miscellaneous object that has a unique power, maybe with numerous uses, maybe a single use, maybe once per day. Using the same script as “A bag of empty bottles” or “A bag of abjurer’s nightshade”. Upon use it would generate a number of magical arrows, bolts, bullets or even throwing hand-axes. Of course, if you go for daily charges on these magical quivers, to prevent abuse, the ammunition would have to be untradeable, undropable and unsellable. But that can all be easily selected in the toolset.

For example, a magical quiver that generates 15 arrows with on-hit entangle a day for the nature inclined ranger. Or perhaps a magical quiver that generates 40 +1 cold damage arrows a day for the frosty archer of the Ice Queen. I believe both examples are far more tasteful than your average +1 attack bonus, +1 mighty longbow so you can pierce blur. And will offer a level of mechanical power in-between useless ranged combat and over-the-top ranged combat.
