Welcome to EfU:R, new players!

EfU:R is a truly awesome server, with some of the highest quality roleplaying around, and over half a decade of experience, lore and growth. However, the harsh conditions surrounding your IG survival and the wealth of mechanical and scripted changes can turn being new into a daunting experience indeed. Fortunately, we have a very nice player base, and the players listed below are all especially eager to welcome you to the server and help you get started. If you have any concerns or questions; if you need help getting started or getting around a problem; or if you just want to have a chat, you are very welcome to contact the players listed below in accordance with the method they are listed under.

For old players who would like to be added to this list, please use the following format:

[hide="Original suggestion post"]In the spirit of making newcomers feel welcome, I suggest the following:

Create a prominent list with players (nearly) always willing to help out newcomers to the server (be it answering questions, showing them the ropes IG, or what have you).

This list could be split in two parts: In-game tells, and IRC. The in-game help list would include character names, and would list those who would nearly always be interested in helping a fellow player out IG, answering questions via tells if they're currently capable (i.e. not in the middle of combatting superbuffed orogs in a DM quest or similar) and if circumstances permit help them recover dead bodies, show them around, show them the ropes of questing, buy them a bowl of nutritious worm soup and other things to generally make them feel welcome. The IRC list would name people who hang around IRC a bunch and don't mind answering questions there. These people would not necessarily be limited to be FAQ bots - newcomers can also just chat them up to say hi and get to chat with a welcoming community member.

Part of the reasoning is that on such a serious roleplaying server, it's very daunting to approach someone in an OOC matter. Heck, I've been around since 2006 and I'm still wary of sending someone I don't know an OOC tell in case I break their immersion. When I was new, I never did it. Secondly, it would let people know for sure the person they're sending a tell is genuinely interested in helping out.

I imagine this list would be pretty unconditional in the way that if you sign yourself up for it, you shouldn't only occasionally be interested in being contacted - You should pretty much always feel up for it. I suppose the helpers should also be experienced enough to not unintentionally spread misinformation. It would be very easily maintained though - a brief instruction post both to newcomers and to players signing up, followed by the list in the main post, and then people can just post their IRC nicks, Gamespy ID's, active character names and what role they'd like to assume in the thread. It'd only take a DM a few minutes a day to keep the list up to date.
