I would disable the abiltiy to start there.  There does not seem to be any way out of the place, unless you die and respawn outside the colony. I may have missed something, but I could find no way out of the place other then dying. The area was quite impressive, it is too bad no one gets to enjoy it.

There is a way to leave Old Port. It's given by the first NPC that you meet (Jacob Brewster) but so many people seem to miss that, that we will just have it be a start for dm-authorized concepts as it's causing a headache to me to have people be lost there without knowing what to do.

I'd say add 200 gold or something like you did when you started at sanctuary.

The problem with starting in Old Port is that you need to make the bluff or persuade check (I forget which) on the NPC you spawn next to in order to get citizenship papers.  That should be changed.

Every PC I've made to test out this starting area has failed to make the check, and thus failed to leave Old Port.

I'm in favour of closing it off as a choice for basic PCs.

It seems to me that the bulk of people coming to the Colony would be from Old Port.  Unless the Ziggurat is pulling people to the island constantly, which I don't believe is the case.  I'd say that the Ziggurat has probably pulled 150ish people to the island so far, with roughly 50ish from Sanctuary, and 250ish from Old Port.

Of course, there is also a good argument as to why PC's should not start from Old Port, and that argument is lack of IC knowledge about the location.  A PC wouldn't show up in the Colony, say he's from Old Port, and then not be able to answer who the Count is, for example.

I'm on the fence.  I like the idea of the bulk of people coming from Old Port, though.

It's not the case, however. At this point in the campaign, the majority of people at the ziggurat have arrived through the portal - Not including factions like House Sharboneth, and the Stygians.

all in favour of locking old port off unless a dm 's permission is given.

Either: make it an app process, but that does mae more work for dm's

or: just literally make you concept, run it by a dm on irc of something and ask them to unlock it? not really an app, just a minor confirmation that you will know how to rp coming from oldport and not break immersion etc.

That's not the case?  That's surprising.  Then again there are a few IC obstacles from escaping Old Port to the relative freedom of the Colony. >_>

Nope. Whether you fail or succeed, you should be able to get the quest and able to escape Old Port but like I said, this seem to not be as obvious as I had originally hope.

I started out in old port and indeed did have trouble figuring out what to do, but, I did explore the place and really really enjoy all of it, a perfect cespool for evil-doers like thugs and pirates.

It would bum me out if it became a DM-permission thing, but there's more than one way to get there, right?

That's my two cents.

I had no trouble finding the quest, the problem being there was a cost fare above what I had, to facilitate leaving. Spoiler X requires spoiler x amount, far below what you start with. And I found, after 2 hours of talking to every NPC and tugging on every door, no way to earn coin in Old Port.  It is an amazeing area, but seems to be a stage set for much later in the game, not a starting area.

Theres more than one way to become a citizen, although you need gold for the other option.
