An Expiration Date on Public/Market posts

I find it a little immersion breaking that any new mistlockian has no excuse not to know mistlocke's recent history and happenings intricately IG due to the numerous old public posts and letters that can be found laying about tacked to gates, walls, doors, etc.  SO, I don;t know if this is already an unspoken rule or what, but i propose that an OOC rule of things expiring after a month or so be implemented.  I mean, the don't just let all those posters clutter and just sit in the rain and mist to get all soggy and collect up .  They place would be covered/filled everywhere. The Mist's End Inn would look more like a 13 year old girls bedroom rather than a medieval inn.

I'm not saying the posts should be locked from view or deleted/hidden.  Just maybe locked from further posting.  Maybe even locked from view.  or maybe moved to an OOC Archive sub-forum.  Because currently, there's no reason for a new pc to really inquire about much that has been going on but for specific details, and not even then, sometimes.  As soon as you have been ig for a few hours you can legit know all the current happenings, more or less.

This might also inspire more PC written books, which are quite phenomenal IMO and are written more frequently than i had expected.

What do you all think?

Gippy

I like this. 3-7 day forum cleaning perhaps, if such can be automated.

The Old Hack

I admit, I don't understand this concern. Why do newcomers have 'no excuse' for not knowing these things? One, it would be a great deal of hard work to track all these posters and read them, two, not all readers are equally skilled at reading and many might shy away from such an undertaking, three, some new arrivals would simply not care and wouldn't bother.

To me, this proposal does not sound like "I wish to be able to make a new character who doesn't know about all these things" but rather like "I wish to keep new characters from knowing anything at all about past events in Mistlocke and its surroundings." I suppose it is a matter of individual preference, I normally work from the assumption that my new characters learn of past history only if someone else tells them about it or they discover some ingame resource like books, but it sounds a little sad to me that people should actually be completely barred from making IC use of old posts made in these forums. They might not even want to use all of them but just one or a couple that would fit well with their concept to know about, or have a chance to learn of.

Pandip

I honestly don't understand the issue with the way things are functioning as it stands.

Ebok

I like looking back for certain things, even If they aren't IC anymore, they provide an access to a certain nostalgia.

TeufelHunden

+1.

But really it seems like more work than its worth unless the forums are running out of space imo

Vlaid

I don't like the idea. Keep that history around. It's what EFU is all about, player created history.

Caster13

I consider it more of a pain when I create a new PC and I have no IC source for my PC to get up to date with the current events and going ons in Mistlocke.

MirrorMask

I only meant that it should be unavailable IC, but still there.  I think it would create opportunity for interaction between PC's.  I'm not saying the threads themselves should be deleted or necessarily hidden.

Aethereal

I concur with Caster13 and The Old Hack.

The proposed change would only limit those characters out there who do dig through every scrap of paper and every avenue of knowledge available (playing such a one currently.)

I think the reason you would find this immersion breaking is due to the assumption that everyone should be reading everything they see, including mouldy old parchments and trash of a bygone age.

On the note of interaction between PCs... PCs die too often, historian PCs are hard to do, and lame if you cannot interact IG (which is just what might get you killed.) How boring would it be to accrue the history of EFU just from forum knowledge, in order to avoid the possibility of being killed in-game. I just do not see any gain from this change, aside from making players constantly refresh say market notices of their active PC.

In a way, the access to these posts IC, is akin to making the village alive, in that its history is talked about by the commoners who are represented by that one PC who sits in the town square (Some things need to be assumed: do you, for example, roleplay your PCs biological needs of eating, drinking, excreting etc, all the time?)
