Somewhat straightforward but I would say that "Thief Mode" being on should allow an attempt to open a chest without breaking stealth and alerting everything near by to slaughter you mercilessly. It is, after all, theft!

Majority of these chests I believe are in quests/random areas, intended to prevent stealthing to the end and looting without any challenge.

Additionally even if you are stealthed when you open a chest/box/crate the "open" VFX plays for the chest for everyone, and is fairly obvious someone is getting at its contents.

The challenge is in getting in there and out with the loot, and without any enemies seeing you. What's wrong with a thief stealing loot from NPC's on a quest?

Yes.

With all the creatures around these days who practically ignore invis.

BlackLion

Invisibility: Not really all that invisible

RWG, EfU has seen some pretty epic thieves that haven't had too much of a problem with crate / chest noise.

IMO you should make your thief take on a personal quest to grease all squeaky chest hinges on the island, as it's an affront to those with super sensitive hearing. While some might opine that this would be a better goal for a gnome, I'm sure it's never been done. With such a goal, I'm certain your Personal Character Notes thread would easily become the first read of every DM, and the major topic of DM watercooler gossip.

Requiring a successful pickpocket check with thief mode to keep from removing stealth mode seems hardly unbalanced. Keep the NPC's downing see invis every time someone invis does something, sure, but RwG's idea lets thieves steal stuff, instead of first have to murder everything in sight then steal stuff, like, you know.. every non-thief does.

The problem with this is that once the thief PC has stolen everthing, then a second group comes in, takes the bigger risk of fighting everything as opposed to using Epic Stealth, and gets nothing. I think there's something to be said though for a balance. Have most of the chests loud/locked with a key held by the boss monster, but some thievable. That way lone sneaks get a chance to do their thing, but it doesn't ruin it for the PC that bothered to round up a group and involve other players. I used to be able to solo a lot of randoms on my Cleric/Rogue by either invis lockpicking or brute force, but it's better when you do have a group as opposed to being  a jackpot for whoever's sneaking about post-reset.
