Bilby rewards

Since this is primarily a rogue quest, I wish it wouldn't reward items that most rogues can't even use.

I just got 9 gems for the first time and was rewarded with a pretty lame "good" buckler than my pure rogue can't even use. The wrist xbow I once got with 7 gems is far superior.

Perhaps it's not possible, but it would be great if your PC could make some sort of selection if you get enough gems (9?) maybe by type of item (i.e. rogue armor, gloves, headgear, rogue weapons, etc...) so you're not stuck with a shield or hammer you (and most rogues) can't use.

SilverSword

I like this idea. Getting to choose what kind of an item you get would be cool. I approve of this suggestion!

Spiffy Has

No. This would lead to all the rogues with the same equipment. I am against this suggestion as it removes the necessity to interact with other players for choice pieces of gear.

SilverSword

It wouldn't be such a pain to make this option available after you get all the 9 gems, unless there isn't actually many variations in the selected kind of an item.

The Boom King

There's only 9 gems? Bilby's a cheating bastard!

IDK. It's a pretty dangerous quest. One little mistake and you're dogfood. Doesn't seem too terrible to let people make a selection when they have enough gems for it.

Relinquish

It ~would~ be nice if all the gear was usable by rogues without having to take additional proficiencies.

Thug Life

Spiffy, that point is fairly silly as not all rogues use identical items.  A choice of item category would be much better as it prevents you from getting totally useless equipment whereas someone else might get exactly what they want based on sheer luck of the draw.

Brimstone Sermon

Exactly. Rogues can't use at least three of the items without taking proficiency feats. Small PCs can't use the handaxes without an overall -4 AB as they are Medium weapons that must be dual wielded.

It's not a case of letting people choose so everyone gets two knuckle-axes, but in making it reward skilful rogues with flavourful loot they'll hang onto. Selling your prize defeats the entire object of making it a challenge. Powerful Bilby items should be prized posessions and badges of honour, not merchandise.

I'd suggest choices of:[LIST=1]
  • "I'm more a soldier than a thief, Baron" (the loot table includes the light hammer, shield, and chains)
  • "I'm a crack shot, Baron" (the loot table contains ranged weapons, but not melee)
  • "I'm a streetfighter, Baron" (The loot table contains melee weapons, and not ranged)
  • "I could use some protection, Baron" (The loot table contains armor)
Any of those would also drop the jewellery, potion stacks, boots and other stuff that any PC would want to use, and keep it to some degree random. You wouldn't be able to order up what you wanted for sure but you would typically get something you could use.

Alternatively, the conversation could generate three random choices for what you get, and the player is allowed to pick one. That would increase the chances of getting somethign the PC would keep.

The Boom King

Brimstone's got a good suggestion.
