Hero monster item table

A fellow in a questing party I was in recently had the poor fortune of being slain by a hero monster in the troglodytes quest.  This in and of itself would not be anything worth heading to the forums over, but in this case the death was due to a PhK item the monster had and it left him feeling a little sour over the experience.

While most of us here on EfU are quick to say, "Suck it up," or, "take it in stride," I sincerely doubt anybody enjoys being randomly killed by death magic in a 2-6 quest.  True, it's no different than being hit for full hp by a x3 crit or getting feared and then chased around until you inevitably die unable to do a thing, but it feels worse for whatever reason to a lot of players.

I'd suggest taking a look through the loot tables and removing death magic items from the potential options of hero monsters that can spawn on low level quests.  Death magic is entertaining for high level quests because it brings a sense of reasonable danger, but if your lvl 3 rogue is being hit with a PhK item out of the blue, it's a different story.

Just a add.

I once found 3 vials of absolute quickness on that quest. So I don't know exactly if this quest needs a good look in.

PhK isn't death magic, but I understand your point and agree AKMatt. Instant fugue deaths aren't fun at the best of times, and on a (relatively) common low-level quest, even more so.

UnholyWon

Honestly it is so easy to gain levels early on in the game I can't really see this as an issue. There are similar low level quests out there that use dangerous spells that can be instant kills.

This server isn't for everyone, but I hope whoever was hurt by the death continues to play and find the fun in the server and move past a low level death.

I can't say I support this in any form.

Egon the Monkey

Pretty nasty, I agree, but PhK's easily blockable by PFX. That said, something like a Ball lightning device would be fairly horrible. However, I've never seen a PHK item off a boss, so this just seems like horrendously bad luck. Might be good to have a separate table for low level monsters also because of the sheer power of hero loot and the imbalance of being able to run a 2-6 for that sort of stuff.

If you're attempting a group quest without Protection from Alignment, things will go wrong.

Letsplayforfun

It's a 4th lvl spell any lvl7 mage can have. It's got two saves and is countered by the most basic lvl1 spell.

Dying is never cool, but dying to PhK at any lvl is so rare that it's really not an issue.

Plus, fighting a hero should be rough.

TheImpossibleDream

Fighting a hero without Protection from alignment he would have destroyed you for lack of saves/deflection ac anyway.

Udenbur

What a mindless sophism, dude. As for the OP, it's a harsh way to die, but it's really just too much of a freak accident. A DC16 doublesave/PFA immunity kill is harsh, but too easily avoidable with proper preparation.

Nuclear Catastrophe

If you're level 3 and you get hit by death magic and die, then well... respawning is hardly a painful business at that level is it, particularly compared with the rewards you would get for surviving.  Even level 6 deaths are far from the end of the world.

Ask them to suck it up.   Show them some cool sandbox thing they can do to make it up to them, come up with something, and come to me, and we'll make it happen.

Instead of reducing xp rewards, I would love to see harder spawns. These seem entirely reasonable to me, and instead of one for a trogs quest, lets have 7!

Porkolt

I'd care to point out here...

The fact that this hero monster was blasting out PhK, well, sure, bad luck, suck it up. So I agree with that.

What seems a little strange to me, however, is that the hero monster is apparently using a special piece of loot that is supposed to drop when the players kill it to attack them instead.

It's like having a stoneskin potion on a generic boss, which is intended to be loot, and rather than receiving a stoneskin potion after fighting a hard fight, you instead have to face a boss that is covered in stoneskin, making an already hard fight even harded, and gives you no extra reward to boot!

I can imagine how special loot that is supposed to be yours upon beating the special monster being instead used to kill you can be a real party pooper.
