Alchemy table no longer works

I was using the alchemy table today on my wanderings, it was working fine.  However later I died with the table packed away not out.  When I respawned it said table was no longer available, I added 4 points to alchemy but the table still wasn't able to be added to tools.  Is there any way this could be fixed or is there a minimum efuss alchemy requirement?
