My reasoning is that unless a snake sees you as food they generally only attack when threatened. So if you got to close they might feel threatened and bite but would generally NOT chase after you unless they thought they could eat you.

I like this idea.  And lowering their base damage but increasing their poison.  It'd make them more unique, and feel more realistic.

Don’t get me wrong here, if it’s a D&D type giant thirty footer or larger type snake that actually would see Halflings, Gnomes and medium sized creatures as food then leave their attack radius the way it is and make them eat what they kill, digested/gone/perma-dead/buh-bye.

Maybe that can be done to make the island more dangerous and PC’s afraid again, (which I noticed they’re not anymore). Have the predatory types eat their kills and make the PC be perma-dead because it was eaten and isn’t anything left to go back to unless they want to reincarnate as leopard shit. That would make the player-base afraid again.

I am for this. You respawn after dying to a snake and your character is Transmogrified into a pile of poo. Except snakes have ridiculously effective digestive systems...

The points addressed in the OP seem reasonable. If these cobras are meant to be that big of BAMFs, at least make them large enough to seem plausible that they do so much damage.
