Lag Spikes

Hello there.

The reason I am making this thread is that recently I have experienced lag spikes that last for a few seconds on a regular basis as I play, as well as other spikes that can last considerably longer.

I have also asked some others about it, and they seem to have the same problem. Now, maybe I am just one unlucky man and have asked people who all have as crappy computers as me. Hence I would like to know, if you all find this familiar.

To round it up, if it is indeed the server being tired. Then I will request regular resets to give it rest. The spikes can really be a problem in the recent ongoing events, and said events would just be a lot cooler without them!

I've noticed some heavy lagging indeed. Usually when the server has been up for long, it is unplayable and impossible to do quests or big events as you can't do anything. I remember that I was able to drink one potion in the same time Ixpadian soldier got three rounds of free hitting to me during the last event. And yes, I've noticed this lagging also when the server hasn't been up for long.

Big events, like said ixpadian conflict, are always going to cause a great deal of lag. When you've got a bunch of people and npcs in one area, even if standing still, it causes terrible lag. Can't be avoided.

Conan The Conqueror

I want to beg to differ somewhat. Generally big events do cause a lot of strain to the server, but the last time the server moved to its current location, things improved dramatically. I live in the same city as the server and have had some really stable gaming all through the summer and up until about 2-3 weeks ago maybe.

Then all of a sudden there are these pulses or spurts of lag. Almost a rhythm of lag. There are times when it subsides, but I think it bears some investigation.

I believe people should begin documenting when they see these regular spurts of lag so that we can determine: 1. How long the server has been up  2. If a big event is going on  3. How widespread the lag is

I took part in a few large scale battles and experienced very little trouble, but in the last few weeks it feels as if some new addition or change is the secret culprit.

VanillaPudding

This was an issue not long ago as well and it did get better for a short time but quickly returned. Large events shouldn't cause lag on modern servers (except for FPS loss on some older machines, but that's not lag!) and whatever is happening is kind of annoying.

Underbard

The last few weeks have been horrible with lag.  Thought it was my server until now.  Seems to not be related to any events whatsoever, at least for me.

Mort

Yes. Please document. This is strange that it appeared. I had believed that my cleanup some time ago helped. Apparently, they did.. only for a short amount of time, however.

Lulzebub

I've noticed it, too, for the record.

For me, it seems like the conversation scripts are always the first casualty. When it takes more than an instant to talk to an NPC, that's when I know for sure it's server side and not client side.

Canzah

Conan knows what I'm talking about, and put it down well in words.

I'd say it feels almost like these bursts of lag come with a set interval.

Archon

Defintely been a few times lately in the last few weeks that there has been horrible lag, and I have a fairly modern computer and an ADSL2+ connection, so it ain't the hardware on my end.

Sex and the Sea Tea

I've noticed this as well. All last night, as well as several night before. Not too bad, but enough to kill me in combat. :(

Cerberus

???... I've noticed this too. I never had a problem before adding the city download. Could this possibly be the cause? Do all the people having lag have this download? Not trying to be mean, I love the download and think it looks great, but... Just a thought...

Underbard

I don't have the city download.  The server was damn near lag free for awhile, then, lag found us.  Mort cleaned it up pretty damn good, but now it seems to be worse than it ever was.
As I have only been on sporadically as of late, I cannot tie it to any one thing.  I only know that it is nearly impossible for me to do anything other than the basic lowbie shit without dying.  At least I can still log in and rp, but it sucks making up excuses not to quest.
