Torches as weapons

I think it would be great if a torch could be used as a weapon.  Nothing fancy in damage (1d2 or 1d4), but it makes sense that it could be.

Make a club.  Add the light property, and the fire VFX.  Name it a Torch.

ScottyB

Why?

Even if we went the club route, it would end up being a several-hundred-gold torch. It's not worth adding as loot to any quests, and it can't be added to merchants.

Besides, if you've ever watched adventure movies with torches or flaming pieces of wood, you know that it doesn't really do "fire damage," it's still just a bludgeoning implement that looks really impressive, and maybe leaves soot behind. I don't know how many people go around attacking other people with torches, so I don't think we'll get any closer to "real life" than movies.

prestonhunt

Why not?

Seriously, I'm not campaigning to see this added.  Just saying it could be done is all.

Raposa_Fox

The reason why torches are not used as weapons, is that they are really fragile, using them as weapons actually gives the user some intimidation and low damage, besides, it gets destroyed if you really hit hard with them. I'd go for the club, dealing 0 damage plus 1 fire damage, gives the light property. fire FX and intimidation bonus. Maybe it vanishes after reset, or maybe it has limited fire activating charges. That would be a lot of trouble for a caprice, but it would be very neat.

BoomdaddyBP

Scotty kind of summed it up, truth be told. Torches rarely would do fire damage as your swing would be the bludgeoning side and as Raposa stated, they are very frail.

Additionally, what Preston said can be done and has for PCs that have earned it. I say leave it at those who really work for it IG to get some special club that is enchanted and can be utilized as a torch and weapon with fire damage on it.

I can sum this entire problem up in 4 words:
Continual. Flame. A. Club.

Seriously. My PC will do that for you for 20 gold, it's advertised. A Cleric might be willing to too. Just RP the illusory flames. People can and have used Continual Flame for that sort of thing. Labur used to use a Continual Flamed/Darkfired Fish Club on quests for ages, because he found it amusing. Continual flame adds a permanent Light property to the item, the only bug is for some reason other people can't see the light.

Exept that commoner mob farmers can make a torch at home, without having three levels of cleric or wizard ...

Luke Danger

Five, actually, it's the 3rd Spell Level, which translates into 5 levels of caster.

Raposa_Fox

Yeah, my bad, 5 then ... I'm sure level 0 commoners with some farm craft skills can make a good torch

Howlando

This is not a productive suggestion.

I've made flaming club "torch" weapons as special loot before, but it's not going to be handed out to everyone.
