Not all challenges are ones you can win. Sometimes to run away, or to hide is the better option.

Why would a DM put up /that/ much effort to set something up, only to drive home a point saying 'you can't win this'?

They do expect you to beat it, and I'm pretty sure if the challenge wasn't meant to be beat, you'd know it off the bat.

Pentaxius

Actually not. Some fights aren't meant to be won. Sometimes it is meant to quench the ''If its there, It means it's meant to be won'' It acts a reminder that this isn't one of those games where all challenges are beatable.

Fate can be cruel. This is EFU.

This isn't to mean that there isn't a way out. Their is always one, but this could mean retreating, hiding - Things you don't usually do instinctively. Sometimes its a test of wisdom, to see if your IC wisdom can circumvent the IC/OOC urge to ''try it''

I'm pretty sure a random army of orcs attacking at the Mistlocke bridge out of the blue isn't one of these situations where you're not meant to win. Otherwise there would be no more Mistlocke, and that's a pretty sudden and anticlimactic end.

Somnolescent

Nonsense, an immortal NPC would kill them.

Paha

Not every thing is meant to be won by you rushing in and thinking you are tough enough to take monsters down. Sometimes it takes a group of people and combined effort, and still be dangerous. That is what it means.

I myself have created things with background, that warrants some level of power. If folks are not strong enough to deal with it, then they are not and have to figure a way around it to get to the point where they can.

Big Orc Man

Some reasons why that which might seem impossible might not be...

A) You're rushing headlong into a suicidal plunge of melee instead of holding a nearby obvious choke or using other tactics.

B) Your best warriors are busy looting things.

C) Your best warriors are being supply misers and trying to "save" them for PvP.

D) You face a threat that is insurmountable in straight-up combat, but there are other, more creative ways to handle it.

E) A key unlucky critical or two levels your front line, and you get crushed.

E) is always funny!
