It's not at all impossible nor is it scary, it's just that people don't know enough about it. Once you have a look behind the curtain you'll find that it's a lot of smoke and mirrors.

I would start by telling them about the setting, like what is Sanctuary, about the factions and memorable characters, then if they are interested answer general questions like why was Sanctuary abandoned, why don't you escape etc. Problematic to this approach, EFU:A's setting didn't grab me as the original EFU did but then I only played 8 hours of EFU:A. I might mention the various character arcs like how it's interesting to see a level two guy with intentions of ruling a piece of the city go on to actually do it. Granted that person had privileged access to the server and it is not as easy as it would look like but it might be a good hook in some people. Oh I'd let them watch me play. A friend to this day associates this server as "that game where you have to walk around everywhere" and extrapolates from there to "LOL SHOOT A FIREBALL AT HIM oh wait that's not good roleplaying." But I digress.

At no point did EVE allow ECM rays draining a ship of energy, a ship exploding destroying the pod, or being podded by concord. I forget what else but suffice it to say there were inconsistencies. Also the names were all made up.

Bitter EVE vet here, that story is almost entirely fabricated, and it got me to start playing back in the day. Some of the details of the story are patently untrue to anyone with a knowledge of game mechanics but the jist is possible in EVE. Reading about someone getting excited over scamming 500m ISK is quaint because these days it doesn't grab your attention unless it's in the hundreds of billions, which incidentally happened little over a week ago when Goonfleet's CEO flamed out and took some 300b ISK from his alliance on his way out. It's debatable whether this was a scam or someone who got fed up and decided to fuck goons. There was also Eve Intergalactic Bank (EIB) back in summer 2006, a renowned "bank" that would take people's money, claim to invest it into side-projects, and offered an interest rate. Once the most visible and most trusted financial institution in EVE, this was revealed beyond a doubt to be a pyramid scheme when after weeks of pressure from people accusing him of running a pyramid scheme, and a subsequent run on the bank, the owner of EIB posted a bizarre video of himself gloating about taking the money. Now EIB was some good drama. If you have patience for walls of text and I guess you do if you read the Nightfreeze story, here's a fuller account of the EIB scam, from the point of view of another scammer.

you can get a gaming desktop and a laptop for school for the same price as a gaming laptop if the reason you want one is for school and gaming

I'd like it if it took less time to get into EFU:A. Granted the last time I played was like a year ago and according to EFUSL that was for eight hours in one sitting, mostly on one of Howland's DM quests, so things may well be different now. While it was fun at the time I felt I had wrung only two hours worth of fun from it not eight hours, and it was limited by the low level of my character and not ICly knowing anyone. If I put in maybe ten-fifteen more hours I could scratch the surface of what's going on and what else there is to do, but thinking about what else I could do with my time, I could start and finish a book, watch an entire season of a TV show, get really good at an FPS, play and get bored of most single-player games, build a relationship, etc. I also spent a lot of time on the old EFU, my last character in particular was swimming in plots, had a ton of DM attention, was meeting people/going places, etc. but when he had to end I came to the conclusion that this was it--this was the best EFU had to offer, and I could not shake the impression it didn't give back as much as I put in. I'm not looking for instant gratification but I do think you should compare this to other games out there. So much time is spent walking somewhere, waiting for someone to type out a response, waiting for someone to do something, waiting for someone to make it for a quest, waiting in general, that I feel if I want a good story I could just read a book (or play DA:O). Or if I want a challenge involving other people I could play an FPS or RTS.

So yeah, make EFU take less time to get into and you might find a direct benefit being that people have more fun because there is more stuff going on/server events seem more accessible and/or important/feel like their actions are affecting the world/players are more willing to talk to each other and toss out plot hooks/less boring stuff. An indirect benefit could be you attract more casual people and well-socialized people who keep their lives in balance with the game, and less of the "crazies" who have decided to stick around for whatever reason, thus causing less burn-out and more fun in that regard.

Before dying in 2007, Watergate burglar and ex-CIA agent E. Howard Hunt implicated a few long-dead CIA agents in the JFK assassination, while Hunt denied his own culpability. He claimed it was because LBJ had a maniacal drive to be president, I don't believe this part though.

The Darkfall forums are a cesspool of fanboys and Aventurine plants who defend the game at every opportunity. This leaked video is pretty much what my first hour was like:

Hey guys, you may not remember me. I played EFU from around 2006 to 2008. I'm stopping by to talk about an issue I've encountered in the real world in the five years since: the Illuminati and their practice of brainwashing their members. Every cult brainwashes people and this one is no exception. I found this article written by Svali, a former Illuminati programmer who left in 1995. It's well written, thought provoking, it makes points that you can do something about, and doesn't engage in fear-mongering like much of what you read on the Illuminati. It helped me understand a friend who was herself kidnapped and brainwashed by the cult, and then given a new identity. Today, around 2-3% of the US population are affiliated with them.

I encourage you all to take time and read this. Spread the word, talk to your friends about it, post it elsewhere, and raise awareness, because they can't hide what they're doing forever.
