As life often goes, Lazlo Copperpot spent the majority of his youth scavenging through the nondescript alleys of some forgotten ghetto. He and a group of street children found some small, innocent joy in the naming of their gang: the Bronzebuckle Brigade, of which he was their leader. Their "captain."
When the rigors of an orphan's life afforded it, Lazlo and his gang would spend their playtime defending their shoddy ghettos from imaginary legions of sibilants. The Brigade's camaraderie served them well through the toils of their youth, but as with all street children, it was inevitable that the cruel and unavoidable reality of actual gang warfare would bleed dry the waters of imagination.
None of Lazlo's comrades would live particularly long lives, in fact. Even "Private" Willingham, Lazlo's best friend and confidant, lost himself to a knife in the back after a botched game of cards. Such is the nature of gang violence.
It may have been these tragedies that plummeted Lazlo deeper into the fantasy world he had created for himself. An unfortunate man's last effort to cling desperately to his memories of a simpler time.
And although his vigilant defense of the Ponds came from an innocent place, it was inevitable that the evils of the world would try to corrupt his weak mind. To use his uncontrollable powers for their own designs. And indeed, his flirtations with the darkest corners of the world took him down a path not even his innocent delusions could protect him from. And so the Bronzebuckle Brigade's most loyal soldier finally met his end.
