Finals is a hell of a drug. Kalek will be stomping around again sometime next week.

Quote from: Sankis;381411Regular explorables can be dangerous enough. Do we really need ones that only exist to kill players?

This. What's being described here is, bluntly speaking, fake difficulty. Artifical or fake difficulty is a 100% random act of "you're boned because reasons". Not even critical hits fall into this category because you can still reasonably assess the danger of a crit off of observation of enemy AB and damage, and heal accordingly.

To reference a popular game based on difficulty, a large part of why Dark Souls is so popular is because while it may be crushingly hard at times, it is never unfair. Risk is always in the player's hands. Trap explorables, as described, fail to meet this standard of game design.

Satisfying difficulty is about choices.

Gotcha, it was the preference to reserve such shapes for a "themed" Druid that wasn't immediately apparent. Glad it's out there in some form or another! :)

I think the current wildshapes are a reasonable baseline for actual capabilities for such a 'shape.

None of them are amazing, but they're reasonably effective.

Believe me, I'm working on it :)

My Druid has been getting himself situated, learning the lay of the land, and building his strength. Making contact with the Stewards is his current order of business, if he can find them!

I'm pretty sympathetic to Emerald Falcon on the point of exp loss on death, as it's been the only thing to really make me reconsider this server as a new player. I'm not the guy who first started playing Persistent Worlds 9~ years ago. Free time is finite, EFU competes with other time sinks and more importantly responsibilities. Even someone who really enjoys the setting, lore, and is a competent roleplayer is going to ask themselves after losing several days of progress "What is the opportunity cost here? What else could I be doing that has a better fun/time ratio? Is this really worth the trouble?". That's a completely rational calculus to make that betrays no lack of maturity. Quite the opposite.

Ironically for all the talk of avoiding attracting people who treat things like an MMORPG, a hardcore raider's schedule and/or mentality is more likely to have the inclination to put up with that stuff.

So basically what I think I'm saying is that the number one obstacle to new player retention is probably real world time constraints and I doubt there's much to be done for it. There's a lot of electronic entertainment out there, the calculus of opportunity costs is a harsh mistress.

Ahh yeah that would explain it. 3E/3.5 blur together like all hell to me.

The lack of Cat's Grace and Endurance is especially weird because in normal P&P Druids do get both of them. They get both of them in NWN2 too. In both cases, for obvious reasons.

NWN1 is the odd duck in this regard. It always was more than a little perplexing.

Sup. I started playing because a bunch of people I know from Dragoncoast and Legacy and Wake and wherever the hell else are here. Persistent World junkies are inherently of suspect judgement but hey what the hell I thought.

Good times. What up.

Suggestions / Underwater Wildshaping?
April 06, 2014, 02:53:22 AM
Pretty much what the title says, I was wondering if it would be possible to either add options for underwater oriented wildshapes or reskin/redo currently existing but rarely used ones (a la what's already been done with Animal Companions to an extent) into more underwater oriented wildshapes.

I know that in P&P at least, shenanigans like these are one of the more appealing aspects of Druidin' it up :)

But I'll be the first to state outright, I don't know how practical this is from a scripting point of view. Just thought it'd be a neat addition given that EFU has a relatively robust underwater component.
