There is the possibility that this is not a bug; I have posted this here because there is a higher percent chance that it is. (as I will explain later). Checking the server logs should clear it up.
Bug: Backpack does not drop on death.
Chance that this is a bug: 95%
Chance some one got lucky: 5%
See explanation near bottom
At first I thought that some one had just taken the bag, however, when I thought about it, there was a rather good chance that the pack had never dropped to begin with:
The only people who knew I had lost all my things would have had to go the same way I did to get the pack - I would have seen them, their absence or the door opening/closing, ext...
None of the Night Risers had been disturbed - they would have had to be a sneaking class or had invisibility.
where
P = People who could have done it
17 = people online
5 = myself and the people around me
Y = People who are lvl 5
S = People who are lvl 5 and take the sewers as a shortcut
G = Those who would return lost items/don’t steal (generally Lawful and Good alignments)
A = Those that haven’t run into me and qualify for G (So the value of A can never be more then the value of G)
R = Those that do not have invisibility or sneak
D = Those that would not go into the sewers at night (it turned dark when I died)
Please note that P only denotes characters that had both the will to keep lost objects and *could* have been in the sewers.
What this equation does not consider is the large size of the sewers and the chance that any one person would be in that sector at any given time, for any given time, based on past popularity, ease of assess for the favored zone entrance at night and favored/most probable paths based on destination and goal. It also does not compare the desirability of being in the sewers at night verses that of any other location in the game, especially while/vs traveling in a group and other quests.
I’m not just considering that there were very few people who could have actually taken it, but the very odd circumstances; especially the fact that the game crashed when it tried to load my character’s death. If the values that were sent to my computer from the server were corrupted enough to cause my client to crash, they could certainly be corrupted enough to be errors of this type (backpack failed to pass the correct value to be dropped) stored and executed on the game server.
So could I be wrong? Sure, as I mentioned above, there is that possibility. I believe the chance that something "funky" went down is high enough to warrant bringing it up; especially if it helps to smooth out the stability of the game. I understand that if it is a bug, I may not be any better off then I am now and that I’m not "entitled" to getting anything back, ever.
Thanks for taking the time to read this looooong article. I hope I explained every thing thoroughly. Character: Silvia Grey
P.S. Now, I can hear you saying "It was the guy who ‘helped’ you retrieve your things, Sherlock! The one who is probably also the butler!" That is a reasonable possibility to consider, however, I would like to share why I do not believe this to be probable:
First, it was his idea to help me - he could have gone down and taken them with out announcing to me what he was doing. Although there are circumstances where one might do this, none of them apply to this situation. Secondly, he gave me *exactly* what I died with the second time; where if he had found the first pack, he would have given me some of the worthless things from there, as well - or only worthless things from the first one, as the second pack had at least a semi-resemblance to value.

- I logged in. ( I planned on spending about 30 minutes ).
- Went into sewers (It was bright out [and hour 20, which I did not check until after. [Why is it bright at 8:00 at night?], so I walked into the sewers and started killing rats.)
- Nightrisers express themselves (I then ran into a group of night risers, drank an invisibility potion and was pounded into unconsciousness. I was starting to recover and still invisible - yay!)
- Other program tries to usurp control (Never Winter Nights shrunk itself and a pop up window for a different program asked me to start downloading a bunch of stuff)
- Immediately re-connected to game
- Character gains consciousness, it’s first move being to punch the closest night riser and break invisibility.(Computer proves it will never be able to take over the world)
- Bucket is kicked (Nightrisers put Silvia on ice after sharing a knuckle sandwich.)
- NWN crashes during the loading screen for the Fugue(Apparently, the computer thought I should be going some where else when I die)
