I think you're confusing it with Counterspell mode, which can't.

I played a wizard once who dropped into Expertise when casting and under ranged fire to reduce the chance of a concentration check, and Defensive Casting to Combust things.

Note that Defensive Casting is also very handy for casting buff or cure spells. If you aren't invised when you run up to drop a cure or imp invis etc on someone, Def. Casting means you won't get AoOed to death over it.

His son, Sgt. Spittlefire did, but he got away. That was a DM quest where DrDs Guard PC both did the most hilariously stupid thing possible on a steath assault (noisily and aimlessly smashed up a load of furniture above the hole full of goblins) and tried the most ridiculous way of fixing the problem:

"OKAY WE SHOULD GIVE UP GUYS LETS JUST GO"
*sneaks off and stands quitely away from the hole*
DM: Roll move silent check
*fails with something like -8 MS*

Only about 4 Bubbleberries spawned on that, not sufficient to get there and back. If this isn't an old bug repeating, it might be worth changing the chances of the berries spawning on each Weed container. Character was Meroim Brushe, the other PC Mary Steel was also in the party. No errors were in the log.
