General Discussion / Re: PvP Ethics and EFU v5
June 21, 2020, 02:06:38 AM
I have seen numerous threads like these over the years, understandably. I think the key is to recognize our perspectives are extremely limited as individual players and our subjectivity almost assuredly negates a dependably objective view of what transpired. The truth is we do not know why premeditated FDs occur unless we are the killers / their allies. The vast majority of killings are plotted behind closed doors, or organized in some fashion IC -- a fraction are spontaneous / opportunistic, which is also fine. Really, if there was a DM present, that alone indicates an absence of griefing -- which is the only reason to raise concern about an FD on EFU, ultimately. Having said that, some deaths do indeed seem 'tasteless' from our vantage points... a good position to adopt is Socrates' "I know I do not know".  Your journey through EFU will be much better that way. Leave analysis of player behaviour to the DMs, those poor bastards!

I can't comment on anything except the lack of DM presence, which definitely can limit spontaneous proactivity. One thing I have found useful before when things went down in my phantom GMT+10 timezone, is the forum function where you can post screenshots and write a quick description/update of IG events. This way you're signalling to the DMs that you mean business, and when the DMs have the opportunity to do so, they're far more likely to take an individual interest in what your PC is up to.

Over the years I've noted that more than any other factor, the biggest impediment to an exciting EFU atmosphere is players unwilling to take serious risks. Over-attachment to characters will always generate stagnation, the reactive mindset that strangles fun before it happens and drives DMs into retirement.

Even if you failed utterly in whatever you tried to do, at least you moved on it. DMs always notice and always enjoy that. If you are consistently doing this, and staying in good humour without succumbing to bitterness about losses suffered along the way, you can build a kind of momentum that can be surfed between characters - recurrent failure notwithstanding!

Ultimately the pinnacles and depths of EFU's high and low cycles have always been determined by the players. I'm not disagreeing with any point that's been raised. I'm only reminding everyone that if the dust looks like it's well settled, it's time to stir it up again.

All of those things are very much permissible on EFU. It's what makes it so great! Courtesy is a matter of taste; these suggestions may or may not be courteous, its entirely circumstantial.

I like the concept but would argue against buffing wizards.

Yes, one would think that Owl's Wisdom, Endurance and Cat's Grace would all be key druid spells, both mechanically and conceptually it just makes sense. Would be great if these were added, and IMO would certainly help wizards seem less OP.

In the first few days, initiate something IG with your character that will keep you interested in it. Meet some buddies, join a faction, found a cult, proclaim something...

Or most important of all, earn some worthy enemies.

I played from Australia on a 1MB connection with 350-400 ping for my whole EFU experience and managed to do okay. I wouldn't worry too much - if it is slow, you will learn to adjust.

These kinds of things boil down to taste, and Anthee is a chef de cuisine par excellence.

I think Valo is right, this has happened to a Ranger I played on EFU.

I've not used the system, I do agree it should be scaled to level though. If what you say is true and you can cast L5 spells as a L5 cleric who's died, then that's a bit whack and should probably be changed.

Otherwise if you're getting a good deal of prayers and generally being a dope cleric, I see no problem with getting +L5 slots and even greater buffs. Clerics are a difficult class to play well, and quite a bit weaker relative to wizards.

To remind everyone that I am the highest authority on what is truly tasteful or not, obviously.
