Title: What was your first day in EFU like?
Post by: Vlaid on October 08, 2014, 11:42:05 PM
Just had some nostalgia going around in IRC about some of us old crusty longtime players recanting our first day on EFU. Share your first EFU day stories. Even the bad ones can be amusing!

My first day I rolled up a Banite fighter. A guy asked me to come to the arena in Sanctuary (EFU1) to spar. Ended up hitting me with choking powder, mugging me and then offering me a job to earn back my gold. Great introduction to EFU if I do say so!

Thomas brought me to efu in efu:a. We got onto the ziggurat, rp'd a little, Thomas abandoned me for RL shit and then VP's alchemy balor attack killed everyone on the server, then their alts, and then their other alts and every npc in Nebezzdos. What few survivors were quarantined to the top of the ziggurat protected by our hero Nduru while every level of the pyramid was littered with bodies. #EFU-lyfe.

Memories from my first day on EFU:

+ Putting on the ring and breaking the illusion for the first time. Note that I didn't really read much of anything about the setting other than post-apocalypse FR and seeing Sanctuary for the first time was as awe inspiring to me as a player as it was for my PC.

+ Wandering around the wilderness wondering where all the spawns were to get experience. Had no idea about scripted quest areas as someone broke the abandoned house quest in the prelude and I missed it at the time.

+ PCs like Thessaly and Tydides coming up and talking to me out of the blue. It was pretty nice to get involved/introduced without having to force my pc into people's conversations and it left such a good impression I came back to play efu the following day.

---

While it wasn't exactly my first day, my first DM quest happened like a day or two after. It was BOM's Kobold Trap Hell quest and it was so absurd. It also introduced me to how death works on EFU. Prior to EFU I was pretty used to little to no death penalty, and when someone told me it was safe to respawn I had no idea what they were talking about. I just sort of sat in the fugue waiting for BOM to res me or something (haha).

Eventually I get the picture and respawned, grumbling all the while but committed to seeing the event through. I also shot a purple crystal cluster for like five rounds thinking it would weaken the boss monster and I remember people calling Melanie an idiot and to TOUCH them. I died two more times there and I remember being furious!

We march our way back to Sanctuary to open the box and see our rewards, and it turns out we all got a piece of personalized loot! I was so happy to have gotten a ring made just for my character that I felt pretty silly about being mad about the deaths. While kobold trap hell was silly by design, it got me comfortable with what I consider one of the fundamentals of EFU. The world is harsh but if you're tenacious, have GRIT, and show a bit of cleverness you can reap some pretty awesome rewards.

Well... I don't remember quite right, but I remember of myself running through the forums and checking the screenies, that's when I found the screenie of Venom, an AMB Talonite to whom I fell in love with. Back then I didn't know who Talona was or what Faerun was much about. Honestly I didn't even know where Toril was (heheh). I got to read more stuff on the most awesome goddess ever and checked the screenie a bit further going then to the perks section. Because of sorcerer perks being so awesome and because I got to know you could summon more than one creature per time in EFU, I gone all mad about this server and placed this all together into a sorcerer cultist called Viveca, my first EFU hag and inspiration for all the others.

I remember little of the play time, but I can say that I got this awesome player that told me that I should app for snake form, explaining me about how apps worked and the like. I also remember of thomas' PC calling her a thing... and a little after of him being dragged dead in the Sanitorium (justice!). Also, there was this feast where people placed food on the ground, which I gone invisible and added poisoned food to it. I remember of Viveca being abandoned in the Witherwoods by a band of running people (first moment of granny's anger!) without myself knowing a thing about the server or of how to survive here. I also remember of some plot with a woman of the Conclave, who I plotted about sacrificing with the help of this fire sorcerer, which managed to trick me into being sacrificed myself... TO THE DAMN OOZE CULT (die, ooze cultists and diz-e :P)!

Heh... this all in a week.

Made my Banite named Morva. I went down to Lower and was all like Praise Bane fools. I got subdued outside the crone by some Montezzi guy. Then they brought me before the Montezzi folks. I was totally defiant and like yo the black hand will smack you like a bitch. They let me go knowing that I was a noob. I ran away back to Upper.

I joined and rolled up Irith. I had a friend tell me a bit about the server, but he otherwise just kind of set me loose. I had played a good bit of NWN SP, but this was my first PW experience. The Workmill was shut down, so I couldn't finish the starter quests. I just wound up wandering into the Square when some stuff was going down with a worker getting pelted with fruit and got involved, then I wound up accidentally getting flogged into negatives until Sara Rift of all people noticed and healed me.

Then I think I did Umberhulks with Halcron and Kindle and pissed them off because I blasted them with a Wand of Fireball, and Sara Rift fell on a horizontal climb and wound up all the way in the Scarmander.

That was a good day.

I don't remember much of my first day. Let alone my first few weeks. I remember  only the realization that I could do whatever I pleased, and promptly going mad with imaginary power.

My earliest memory is attacking npcs with no DM, emoting attacking NPCs with no DM, throwing rotten fruit at sherriff (azzam?) also an NPC. And again, with no DM. Smart players began to avoid me like the plague, as I would often do these things in front of them. How could they know how to respond?

I made a PC at Petey's request, Punisher Barbarian, was RPing to myself while destroying worms in the worm pits.

Meldread gave me 250 xp and welcomed me to the server.

I don't remember my first pc ever in efu back in chapter 2, but i'd say when i first returned to efu after a long long break in chapter 3, that first pc in a while was hilarious. I made a alchemist mage who was used as a pawn by a conclavist that gave him a specific set of ingredients to perform a alchemical recipe for him so he wouldn't have to risk it, and it ended up summoning a slaadi planar devourer on the outskirts of mistlocke, that slaad summoned two more slaad, who summoned two more slaad, ect. ect. until an army of slaad was rampaging around slaughtering half the town and even the big bad gaurd dude in the front back in ol efu3 got killed and it took the DM team to clean up the mess. The pc was executed for the action and overall he lived 1 hour total.

Killed rats in the sewers. Ran into ten different people, all hunting rats. The story doesn't do justice to how much fun it was just... surviving. Killing RATS.

It was so desperate. We'd go out and hunt rothe in big groups. Speed potions were godmode (if you think that sounds awesome, it was about as cool as the Great Depression). Maybe we'd do a quest, but we were scared and so bad at the game... great days, mostly. [throws on his rose tinted hater blockers]

Talked to every NPC in Sanctuary, learning a bit about the lore and history of the server. Loved the detail that went into it, I'm a fanatic for detail. Got picked up by Watcher Careswell within the first hour, and the lot has kept me busy since. I thought it'd be a little challenging to integrate myself at first, but it's been pretty fine so far.

I went through the portal as Jorgah Biack, a Half-Orc fighter. I didn't know anything about D&D, NWN, nor RPing stats or anything.

I ended up in Mistlocke, walked about and thought 'boy, that's pretty'. Then a few Dwarfs showed up, started talking about how he was filth and it was a good ten or so minutes of back and forth of arguing. Then I got pulled away for the Well quest, where it was spiced by Jaydemoon and Talir.

I died 8 times, I had my pack stolen while I was dead and I was running around in bad chainmail with a hatchet. Then I met a few characters from the Wyrm Watchers, the first one being Kojach. He went on to meet the rest of the Watchers and made good acquaintances.

Around day two or three, every character apart of the faction was executed by the Conclave, leaving me to wander about the server aimlessly. I found my way though.

Me and some dudes on Ravenloft were waiting in the ooc starting area after a reset when we decided it'd be "hilarious" to troll EFU.  Rumor had it this was a degenerate server filled with the worst sort of players (no doubt rumors propagated by butthurt refugees).  So me and about 10 other people come through the ziggurat all at once and just walk about in a large group.  We eventually came across Decimate_The_Weak's cleric of Targus near the Gobsquat  who then summarily converts us all to Garagos. We then march to the Temple District screaming at the top of our lungs "GARAGOS!!!" and participate in blood sacrifice within the shrine.

Myself and  some others realized how wrong the rumors were after that and ended up playing on and off until we started playing EFU full time.

I think my first day was somewhere in the "alpha" or beta stages of EFU. I know that I effectively was on a prelude that worked our way to sewertown after some light skirmishes with oozes and bugs. I played -very- briefly for a year or so before I was able to understand that a +1 weapon was not commonplace, domains mattered based upon faith, and that the world was highly dangerous. Luckily, even that mild event was enough to lure me back here to a place far superior to others I had been playing at.

Also I remember Moloch was involved, and then I remember that Moloch played a character called Evol Cyric, and so I feel better about being mutually educated on role-play and quality settings ;)

My first character was a halfling barbarian named Reginald Fleetfoot, based on a PC from a friend's PnP campaign.  I didn't bother to read any of the OOC info, got lost instead of finding Sanctuary, and rage quit.

Then I made another dude called Dantian Hall who was an engineering-oriented wizard/rogue with with 8 constitution.  I found my way into Sanctuary this time and was promptly shuffled up to by the honorable Reverend Doctor Dragon, Esquire, who conversed with me for about 10 minutes and gave me a proper introduction to the server, including educating me on the fact that tells existed and it was better than just going "//how do you do that?"

Afterwards, I talked to some dude named Karlston Brass, I think, and later to a Spellguard PC whose name I forget.  I was recruited into the Spellguard Associates (not auxiliary in those darks) and enjoyed the faction immensely.

Oooh! Such a nice thread!

Well, my first day was after I tried to go through all the rules/background/mechanics at the forum for two days. I made Jarik Blake (Go go name generator), couldn't find Ibrandul's domain on the start area so went with Grumbar.

I went through the prologue, trying really hard to find another way instead of stepping into a magical unknown portal. Gave up in the end and went through. Jarik received his ring and put it on. The first people he met were a gnome couple (I want to say Disco and Plum, but I'm not sure), who thought he was a guy named "Jack", later leaving saying "all humans look the same, have a good one, Jack". I listened briefly to a lecture a mage was giving at the square then started to explore Upper.

I sort of messed up with the whole starter quests, receiving a sending stone without doing the quest at the start. Then I went to the clerk to do the "Go to Serena Tower" thing and took the quest. There was a DM shout about a reset incoming and if people need a delay, and being the noob that I was, I didn't say anything, thinking I'll finish that quest after reset. I came back after the reset to find out the quest wasn't on the journal, tried to take it again, but it said I reached the max time a PC can take it. Jarik Blake never received his orange safety cloak or Spellguard mint. A month later I found out why so many people wear those ugly looking things and where people get them.

---

On the first week, Disco took me with his gnome to explore, explaining to me both IC and OOC about the server and a bit of the history (When the server was made, how many previous chapter, etc.). We then found ourselves seeing boat with a gold on it, as was told to us by Lialh, so we jumped down to the lake, nearly drowning, then getting "saved" by Murderbandits.

They wanted to enslave us and we kept telling them the other one will be a much better slave and turning against each other (like true comrades), they told us they'll let us go and in exchange we have to bring them elves as slaves (I mean, there was a deeper meaning why Jarik hung with elves so much at the start). They agreed, with Jarik drinking an invisibility potion to flee.

Not knowing the server at all I just ran around the area with Murderbandits chasing after me, until the spell wear off, so they got me. I was lucky they just decided to rob then let us both go. Disco had to leave, leaving me to find my way back. I thanked Lialh for the interaction, saying I'm a new player and was glad Jarik didn't end up dead. They welcomed me to the server.

Then I got lost, a Minotaur thug brought me to negative, I stabilized, ran away and somehow managed to get back to Upper.

I spent a few months over at COA, ( my first pw) learning the basics and getting to like it, then after an awesome plot / event dropped off the face of the earth. around 7-8 months later i got a nostalgia fest, and joined up for v5. when that went down hill my brother persuaded me to try out EFU, and i spent about 30 minutes creating a character and jumped in game, as Mali Stalwart... about six or seven minutes after getting into upper, i ran into thesseley long/lost?guard who immediatly iniated pvp with a elf for having his blade out, which was something i had never really experienced, ( the closest to Pvp i had ever got was fighting a Werewolf in coa, getting crushed by a potion-spammer, and one exilerating fight that lasted about 2 seconds.) and needlessly to say, in the face of my previous pvp experience, it was amazing. i think i logged off not long after that, but that was that. ( at least thats my memory, might've got mixed up somewhere along the way)

My first day feels like it was a lifetime ago. My father and I played NWN together he hosted a server and we did the main campaign together. I loved it, but didn't understand a thing I was doing. He would then not play the game further after we finished the campaign saying he didn't have time, so I explored its various options including its multi-player aspect. I would then amble through the list of servers, going to various ones and then to EFU, in which I would make a rogue/sorc elf, and run into the tavern(Wanton Wastrel) in which I must have said the wrong thing and was thrown out. I being a offended child took great offense that my spectacular rp was being shut down by the less enlightened, and tried to fight my way back in. Within an hour I was FD'd, and my heart grew three times that day. And I would be slaughtered on my next five or six pcs. It was hilarious looking back on it.

Having tucked away Neverwinter Nights for a while after buying it when it was released, I randomly happened across it one day while tidying out a few old things. I installed it, loaded it up and came across EFU in the server list.

I created a Beshaban Cleric and started to explore. Within perhaps an hour or so I bumped into a Kobold and a few other unsavoury sorts and went on my first quest - Trog Cave in the Docks - during which my Cleric killed her first victim and converted her first Beshaban after some timely DM-curse-intervention.

Suffice it to say I was hooked :)

We've all been there.

---

I hadn't been in any serious roleplaying settings for close to a year, but I heard about EFU through my twin brother (Ostheim/Erwin) and decided I needed something to help me take my mind off a recent break up. So I rolled up a character on NWN (which I'd never played before,) along with a few of my online friends. Made a rather generic fighter whose only real trait was that he was illiterate - we fucked around in the post-apocalyptic Ziggurat for a bit before heading on to Mistlocke.

I distinctly remember coming at EFU with a breezy, flippant attitude and acted rather OOCly in dialogue a few times, which I'd soon learn was utterly wrong for the setting.

Anyway, we crushed a few quests, as I remember, but it was a fairly unremarkable beginning overall. Character later got executed by the Conclave and made way for a slightly better one.

I remember going through the prologue with a certain sense of thrill, then all of a sudden, past stepping through the portal leading to the illusion, while I was taking my time and wandering around, trying to unlock some of the doors... something popped out of sneaking and pretty much one-shotted me. I remember thinking "whoa, spawns really -are- hardcore here" only to find out I had been killed by Zhunool. The poor guy had absolutely no clue I was such a low level character and invented a phony reason to let my character go, accidentally "dropping" a purple crystal in the process.

Fun times.

Failing to find the Hooded Man, I was exploring the vicinity of the Strange Fortress on my level 2 elf monk when I somehow got lot in the access ways. The character eventually died in the residential districts to animatons. There were no DMs to help me. I logged out.

The next day, I made a Mesmerizing sorcerer. Over the next few months, I struggled to keep level 4 and died in every conceivable way. DM Ladocicea gave me increasingly powerful loot in the futile effort to help me; I only found new ways to need a respawn. As the server staff simply could not be available at all hours to clear me, my character's corpse was brought to the Mausoleum a ridiculous number of times.

His routine state of "dead but now he's not" felt as though I was spoiling the immersion of others, so I decided he'd just stay a corpse and moved on.

My first day wasn't terrible.

I made a dwarf named Loghaire Harrow, who had a dream of building a town. Wandered into the docks district and encountered a bunch of people fighting nightrisers. Many of those people turned out to be Banites who had a temple by the entrance, so I hid in there. Surprisingly they didn't kick me out.

I ended up meeting a guy named Conrad, who lived at Castle Blackhearth. He let me team up with him, and we set to work making plans for a town.

All in all, I didn't find out how harsh the server was until the Docks rose up against the nobility.

Mort I believe it was, ran the EFU1 chosen quest as a DM quest before the quest sytem was initiated. Casualties were huge. Tons of people showed up and died horribly maybe four people survived and those of us who survived were fucking terrified and thrilled to have found invisibility potions and one haste potion.

Wandering around Lower Sanctuary I fell in love with the grit because it was so like the Fallout series of games. Rundown apocalyptic town in a harsh wasteland, Brotherhood of Steel in Upper Sanctuary, Ghouls and Super Mutants in the Underdark (undead and thralls ho), Death Claws in the Sewers (Chosen), Raiders (Drow) and all the awesome fun.

From that point on I was pretty hooked. All the apocalyptic grit, shady crime, political struggle to hold the world together or exploit the end of the world for my own gain.

It was beautiful.

My accountably "most recent" days on the server was back in EFU:M days when BOM decided to throw a party with the Mytrylan Red Star as a backdrop. My fighter build PC got hit hard in the head with swarms of Red Stars, and almost fugued, but he survived in the end, thanks to the concentration of PCs present in Mistlocke. An awesome storm, that is. The PC walked around town afterwards, and died for a few times in the scavenging quest down the warehouse to spiders. However, I don't think I remember anybody's name in particular back then... I only remember it was a pale-skinned guy with a GFX that resembles an vampire that guided me around the town, but I don't recall I ever checked for his handle...

I got told of EfU about halfway through its second chapter by my friend PoP. Decided to roll a fighter just to try it out and see what it was like. I arrived on the Ziggurat, lost and confused, and soon after met two PCs talking where one was invisible (I had NO idea about the politics at the time, I only later realised that the invisible guy was likely someone seedy and wanted by other PCs.) I very hesitantly asked what was going on and was amazed and pleased by how willing they were to include me in the RP.

Next I ambled to the Docks and found myself witnessing an argument where someone was accused of some obscure misdeed by several others and then fled. The Talosian cleric who led the investigation said "His fleeing is proof of his guilt." My big mouth took over and I said "His fleeing is proof that he is scared of several angry armed people who wouldn't listen to him." Soon after this turned into a fight and I got creamed. o.o

My fighter continued to amble around for a couple days and the primary impact she made on the server was the thud she made when hitting the ground after making stupid mistakes in a fight. I then got inspired by the name of the server and made a halfling sorcerer named Solace who had fled slavery under the drow after brutal torture and being magically coloured into looking like a drow as a sick joke (look, we have a mini-drow slave!) (At the time I had no idea that this probably would have required DM consent or an application but the DMs let it pass.) She soon made friends with a Son of Sabuth called Psalms played by... Thomas. >.>

I remember having no idea how to handle myself.  I had never played any other NWN server up to that point.  I literally came in blind.  I rolled an elven ranger/rogue that I stuck with for almost a year.

At that time I thought that you could actually find "the way".  You could just search hard enough and find it.  While of course this failed, I was able to see a great deal of the server early on, which proved an incredible asset to a complete newb.  As I learned to play other chars, and realized escaping took a great deal more than just finding a hole that lead to the surface, I learned to inhabit the chars that I loved, and accepted that there is a very high probability they will die a horrible death.

So funny now to ALWAYS go in expecting a horrible death to your char, but enjoying it when it's cool.

I came to EFU knowing very little of serious role-play. I spent like a week on a wizard doing only deliveries by myself to gain my levels to buff up my braindogge that I tried to play as a pet for other characters in-between being killed by all good folks. Pesky humans, who wants to RP as that? Pff, I'll be a braindogge.

A lot of these kind of things took place. Luckily for the server I didn't spend too much time by the computer per day.

At the core I have not improved. I would still play braindogge to this day was it not removed as a familiar.

I made a halfling knowing nothing about halflings. All I remember was his name: Frulbo (?) Muddenspeak. I just walked around and explored. There was a lot of roleplaying with a rogue called Kepler Szul who eventually became a wizard or something. I liked that guy. He was nice. There was also this creepy halfling that was 90 human years or something and wanted DMs to make him blind. I always thought he was a necromancer but then he just died of old age.

See? I didn't encounter anything violent.

Thomas, playing a halfling bard and storyteller, introduced the first druid I'd ever played in anything ever to Leged, Naga's stargazer werecat, and the tiger tribe  druid companion whose player I can't recall. Then we did orcs and orcs 2. About a week later, I witnessed Thomas' PC being killed by Naga for spying on the Stewards.

I was hooked.

Played a few characters back in Mistlocke for less than a couple hours combined, so not long enough to make a story of it. A year or two later checked back here, made a character named Hagkir Kingarhd.

I ran around the wormpits, and found a red wizard of Thay who hired my dwarf to sluice through the muck, carry worm meat, and do general messy work for him. Had some surprisingly fun banter in the steam grates, and cashed out cleanly. But I never saw him again after that.

Later that day, a sending hit about undead swarming the In-between, and decided to go throw my noob body into the meat grinder. Yet what I found was Jormund Bjornsson, and the whole Tempered thing had me hooked. So I stuck around long enough for the dwarf marches, vastly superior loots, and later days, induction into the fold.

My earliest memory was in EFU 1. I played a Cleric of Bane named Mulahey Blacksheld.  I didn't really let anyone know that but I suppose DE showed me as evil. A paladin asked if I wanted to spar in the arena and I agreed. My level 3 self was promptly destroyed. After which the paladin howled ALL EVIL MUST DIE! FOR TORM! He butchered me the end.

So a Paladin of Torm lured you to your death dishonestly. If he loses, it was just a duel and he knows you're strong. If he wins, he just kills you. That doesn't sound very righteous to me.

My first day was pretty interesting.

We got a nice welcome when we got to the city, and had some great great rp. That was the first thing that I noticed - people seem to know their roles and characters in an in depth manner that lets them present themselves as part of the world and make it really quite interesting, which I adore as a fan of social/political RP. We were pretty quickly given a show around, handed advice from various sources, and generally given a great impression.

I've found a few systems a bit awkward, but mostly because I'm simply used to different ones, and it hasn't been frustrating, so that's awesome as well.

My first experience with a DM quest was also very nice, and far more immersive than I am used to. I really appreciated the content and attention to environmental detail (and the dms patience as I kept screwing up with the /c roll system and the boat transition blunder!).

All in all, I'd say my first day was exceptionally positive, and though there's a few things I miss, I'm looking forward to more.

That said, in the interest of constructive criticism:

What I did struggle with was adventures. Adventure proved fast, go go go, and didn't seem to involve a lot of RP. It felt kinda like a racy grind. I also noticed that if adventures got mentioned people would almost always ditch the rp to go adventure, with a few exceptions to which I'm extremely grateful. I should say, I do enjoy adventure, but I like to be able to emote, talk, and stop now and then without being left behind - I think dungeon environments can offer a lot of great RP opportunities!

Though it wasn't my -first day- my worst instance was, having been told to loot, I did so, and when finished I turned around to find that I had been left there alone. That was really difficult on me. (I do have to note that I have had positive adventures with RP, it just hasn't been the majority.)

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with adventuring pedantryINC. I think I might have been around for that and all I can say is when the groups get on the larger side it's harder to make your PC's voice heard, harder to notice people and generally harder to have impactful and intricate RP.

Best advice I can give is if you want more RP centered adventuring is try to adventure with people you know, in smaller groups and don't respond to the adventure sendings as much. Best way to get a more personal adventuring experience in EFU. In my opinion at least.

Just over 8 years ago today, I logged in as the faithless elven fighter Sil'ith. Ambition was to make an arcane archer. Got recruited by some guy to run the Hobgoblin brewery quest. I was completely amazed by how strong this other character must have been, as he had a CLOAK, and not only that, but a cloak that matched the outfit. Seriously, people, cloaks. We got to the quest area and were promptly killed both us, because apparently that cloak didn't make him as strong as I expected.

44 minutes, decent enough for first character.

First memory I can recall is in EfU1, being totally confused as to why I couldnt start with armor, and learning if i saved my money from the starting area I could run over and buy I think it was leather armor from the kobold refugee camp near the gates. Discovering the old woman that collected all the junk on the server in her wheelbarrow in the town center, I imagined I had found the servers biggest secret >_>

There was chainmail guys, magic chainmail, that looked so much cooler than the standard NwN stuff. Pretty shortly I died to the fairy with the beetles quest. And then I took a break, really didnt come back until early EfU:A, where I was livid snakes had disease AND poison.

I'd give anything to have a do over with the earlier chapters

I had in my head that I really liked the Seekers and wanted to be one. I rolled up a monk because in my head they had everything- no need to go nuts looking for gear, stealth, no need for a weapon- and tried to find a Seeker PC in-game, which took some time. I finally met one who told me that I needed to map out an area of the Underdark to be considered for membership, so I grabbed a mapmaking kit and a friend who did the zombies quest with me and went out into the Underdark. EFU1 maps are different from what they used to be so I'm not sure exactly where I ended up, but I remember getting murdered by...hook horrors? Kobolds? somewhere near the Low Road. That was the last Upper PC I played for a while, what really hooked me was the Lowersman I rolled next.

Quote from: Stranger;409560The next day, I made a Mesmerizing sorcerer.

I was exasperated and frustrated to the point of ragequitting from the DM client with the amount you died, so I can't imagine how you felt. I am surprised you are still here tbh.

You two + Moonlighter were part of that wave of new players we had last year who were extremely good roleplayers with absolutely zero ability to stay alive for more than five minutes.

My first day of efu was the first day of efu (I think). I had been playing CoA before that and met some of the people who founded efu. I believe Howland password opened the server sometime around thanksgiving. I was immediately absorbed by the setting. At that particular time, there were about as many DMs as players, so nearly every NPC was shouting insults and trying to kill me. Somehow I ended up with a uber-OP hammer with a visual effect...which got taken shortly after because yeah, uber-hammer.

All that aside, I was really pumped about the setting, died a few times on quests that weren't balanced yet and had a generally awesome time. Immediately I noticed that there was a story here, filled with themes and intrigue. Who doesn't love a mystery?

All these people with cool stories.

I got told by Ook one day that there was this interesting NWN server with neat mechanics that he'd been told by someone and it was called "Escape from Undeath". So together with Frenzied we joined up and did some lowbie quests together and... not much at all happened except for that. The server didn't really reach out and grab me, as I was playing a fighter and had no idea about the best way to play one on EFU. The setting was cool, but I had recently been burnt on fun settings for PWs that got turned to junk due to wacky DM ideas, so that wasn't enough for me.

Then I read the forums and decided that I really wanted to learn about the custom summoning mechanics and the alchemy system. So I made a wizard and the rest is history.

That was years and years ago, back on Chap 1. I don't remember a lot, but I do remember that I made a cleric, then learned your domains have to match your god. Made another cleric, then realized your alignment has to match perfectly. Spent an hour on google till I found a good deity with domains that supported summoning and healing, and made Celuril Fein, priest of Lurue. Spent some time wandering around talking to all the NPCs and wondering how much work had to go into this server before I went outside and promptly got my ass killed. Respawned at my corpse, died again, respawned at the mortuary, ran into somebody who gave me some clothes and gold, and I forget from there.

Oh, and I was -running everywhere- of course. :p

I've actually thought about apping to play him again, since he never did successfully escape from the underdark, but he'd just be another mourning elf whose god is sitting in Dendar's belly slowly digesting. Maybe a little on the crazy side from years of solitude or somesuch, but I can't really think of enough to make him fun and worth filling out an app.

Odd thing though, of all my old chars who I still look at from time to time just to enjoy the sense of nostalgia, (I don't like pvp a lot so very few of my guys ever perma die, they all just retire at the end of each chapter and remain locked away forever like little wax statues) Cel is the only one that doesn't spawn in the DM retirement area. He used to, but now he spawns in the illusion where ppl emerge from the portal. Just in case that's a bug or somethin. :p

A+ thread.

All I remember of my first day playing an online server was going up to a guard, talking to him, and then finding out he was actually playing as a guard.

Like, roleplaying.  He was a real guard.   That got me -hooked-.

I was later killed by beetles who I expect ingested my corpse, after I played a moronic dwarf called 'Pickle' (based on Pikel from Drizz't.  I know.  Lame).  To this day I am always pleased when I see dead newbie adventurers next to one or more beetles.

I made my first PC (my very first time playing NWN ever) about a year into EFU:M with Ryan and a friend of ours who did not end up playing with us. I died twice on Granary and made friends with a Footman of the Numinous Order and an evil Sharran sorceress.

It was the the variety of the quests, the exquisite attention to detail of the world, the depth of lore of each of the unique factions, and the great amount of potential for each PC to carve out their own legacy that got me hooked.

My first day of EFU was when I was thirteen and it was still UD. Really young to be playing EFU but it sure taught me good lessons! My first memory was playing a spiny elf in Lower that insulted a DrD PC and I was promptly beat down. The many creatures of Lower averting their gaze and many hushed voices telling of the thug.

It sent a chill down my spine and let me know the game was hardcore and that conflict could happen at a few flicks of the tongue. The conflict leaving ripples that had an effect on other players.

It has been more than half a decade since then (and a few alt accounts) and I still believe this is by far the best NwN server out there.

This was in the original EfU.  My friend logs in as a fighter and we do some lowbie quests.  I can hardly remember them now but I'm pretty sure there were zombies in a warehouse?  Anyway I go to my friend and I'm like, hey how much coin you got?  He's new to roleplaying so he says "360...hmm...maybe they'll name a weird machine thing after that number someday."  I laugh.  He runs off.  Gets killed by a Flying Chosen Mage.  He says "WTF did I just die to a flying rat?", I say yes, and he never played NWN again.

Earliest memory of EfU was mapping the underdark in a horribly gimped Halfling ranger and chatting with Howland as I tried to stay alive. Derran was hands down my favorite character to date on any server, or in any game.

It's the quality of the role play and server that keep people here, and draw people back to it time and time again. (and yes, I am downloading from GoG ATM - so hopefully will roll a character this weekend. I was sucked into the world of EVE Online and then competitive MWO play)

Don't remember my first day, but an experience from my first days in efu stands out. EFU first iteration- Was playing a dwarf rogue? Crossbow type., stealthing about the mines. An elf? Char gets jumped/mugged by another PC. The elf wins, and asks me ic what to do with the failed mugger..it was a FD battle.  Not sure we even new about the diff between FD and subduel then, we were both pretty ignorant to the whole RP thing at that time.  IC, I suggested he dump the corpse in a trash hole, so as to remove evidence and prevent reprisals.  He did.  We got a trip to the DM corner..apparently it made the possibility of resurrection mechanically impossible, via DM or otherwise...

I saw a screenshot on another forum of a prominent wern8 paladin praying to bane which mentioned efu. It gave off an alternate reality vibe to me so I asked for a password and logged in.

Nothing was setup yet. There were no quests, just a underground monster infested server to explore and a bunch of DM possessed NPCs. Finding a weapon or armor was big. You couldn't walk around Sanctuary safely by yourself, so everyone in the server tended to clump together.

We were about 12 players who stumbled on three watchmen trying to arrest a tigereye. After a tense bit of dialog the tigereye becomes invisible somehow and laughs before beating up all three watchmen on his own. He doesn't rob or kill them, just tells them to stay out of Lower.

My first day was ages ago likely in EFU:A or earlier, with Merrybuckles Stefphini?, but I have no memory of ever playing in those times ^^. It was in my more PvP/FPS days, so I guess it didn't catch me as much as it does now.
6 years later, I joined in with Biam Bricklebuck. I ran into Mistlocke, completely confused, and somehow ended up talking with Aethereal's red-dressed(not Apocryphan) and half-mad alchemist.
And that's how I got my introduction to alchemy and EfU. Or so I think..
