Title: Spiked Barricades - Reuseable?
Post by: Frenzied on October 06, 2013, 08:54:51 PM
So I know that these are almost never used due to weight requirements, but could these be made packable like the other siege equipment?

It'd make them a little more versatile and you'd get more bang for your buck with their use. Plus it'd be neat to actually be able to prepare positions without it casting you hundreds of gold out of pocket for every time you do it.

Some mobility would be excellent, yes.

I imagine the reason they cannot be disassembled and reassembled multiple times is because doing so would reset the health on the barricade, meaning you could have one that lasted forever.

Only allow repacking if they're at full health might solve that.

Repairing them sounds like a good use for the engineering skill.

I don't think there's much engineering involved in repairing a simple barricade made of some wooden spikes.

You'd need zurkhwood for that, though.

I might be alone in this, but I don't think a rarely used (by players) item of the spiked barricade needs to be overly complicated into a minecraft-esque gathering, engineering and maintenance mini-game.

But it seems that if you could pick up the barricades again there would be nothing stopping "enemies" from doing the same, rendering them rather useless against other players!

That's certainly what I would do. But at the same time, I imagine attacking someone while they try to move it would stop it? It does make sense. Someone wants to get through it quick, they smash it, with some hp loss. But once the enemy is gone or distracted though, it shouldn't be hard to just lift it. Real life engineers risk life and limb all the time to get through these barricades. They run in, in the line of fire, and snip through barb wire.

There is a delay for putting a barricade down.   There could be one for picking one up.

Unless you're knowledgeable in the art of barricade building, it isn't fair to say what skills are necessary.  It might appear simple, but I somehow doubt it's nearly as simple as you might think.

I think having barricades made to where they'd be more used would add a new dynamic to PVP/PVE.  As it is they're rarely used due to the expense and weight.  Being able to pick them back up would make those factors less burdensome.

Honestly I never considered these a pvp a assets. More like if you wish to claim a fort or make a place yours, you could fortify it with catapults, ballista, and, barricades.

What I would ask instead of being able to pick up and put back down, can these be permanent? And last through resets so fortified positions could be made. I would ask the same for catapults and ballista as well.

These things tend to really screw with the crappy NWN AI, don't they? Mobs can get stuck helplessly on the barricades, leaving PC's free to just plink away at them from a distance.

If you could re-use barricades then they could be abused quite readily and to great effect on scripted quests I'd have thought?

Personally I'd rather have something like this as a perk for a player who goes to great lengths to utilize them, etc. Like how sometimes merchants get the planar shop, thralls get spell like abilities, etc. An engineer who seriously puts in the time and effort to the craft to be rewarded by the DMs, etc.

Just a general "Everyone can do it" sort of takes away the merit of it I feel. As Red_Judas said though, engineers cutting wires/etc, I think it'd be a very cool perk for a dedicated Engineer PC to be able to lift and move barricades, etc.

Though that's best left up to the DMs for individuals in question.

it's quite simple, actually. alike the ropes you tie to cliffs, you make it possible to reassemble the barricade only by the side where it was placed, making it impossible for the ones in the other side to go away with it.
