Title: Design a Potion
Post by: Sternhund on September 26, 2011, 10:08:31 PM
I had some interesting ideas for new potions to add to the gameworld that I plan on implementing later. If you have any ideas throw them up here with a spot of flavor text and I'll add the particularly good ones in my future toolset updates.

I'll add: The potion effect does not have to be a spell! I can script in custom effects that do wonderful and amazing things. Get creative!

For instance (I do not plan on implementing the following): A potion that permadeaths your character while dealing explosion damage equal to the amount of HP your character had in an area of effect.

Potion of Regenerations

A complex brew made from strips of troll flesh and liver. It's taste is horrid and it's smell has the faintest tang of fresh vomit. When drank and in some places chewed, it will bestow upon you the regeneration of trolls for a short time.

Potion of the Chicken
This concoction was invented by the late-Alexander Fowl, who was undoubtably a ingenious alchemist. He was also an impressive gambler both for the volume if his winnings and for the rate at which those turned into debt. Do to his slight build and large loans he was always seeking to perfect the perfect means for escaping his creditors time and time again. He decided to create flight, and so he began his brewing of the ultimate potion, which like all his creations worked perfectly. Unfortunately for Mr Fowl it lasted longer then he had forseen and lo he ended up served as dinner.

Effect: Haste (10) and Polymorph Chicken 5minutes.

Potion of Chickenhood

This fabled potion, a lesser version of the Potion of Chicken is rarely made on purpose but rather, is an accident byproduct produced in an attempt to make it's more famous cousin, the Potion of Chicken.

The drinker of this potion becomes utterly certain that they are in fact, a chicken.

A text message pops up for the player informing them that they believe themselves to be a chicken, till the effect wears off.  Give them a little swirly "charmed" graphic above their head.

Touch of Gold
These highly unusual potions glow with a golden liquid. Upon it's lable is the simple phrase, Shower of Gold; and a Warning lable: Do not drink near others.

1 damage < 10

1d6 damage per 50 maxed at 10d6.
Excess gold can be found in scattered gold piles next to the caster.

QuoteShevarash's Wrath
"First brewed by elven evokers following the fall of Illithyr, these potions help the user in defeating the unnatural spell-defences of the Drow"
+4 Caster Level for all Spell Resistance checks for 5 minutes
QuoteWolfsbane Draught
"This rare and expensive draught is highly toxic to were-beings, though merely unpleasantly bitter to others. It is in occasional use as a way to prove ones innocence of accusation should you be able to afford it."
Poisons any Shapechanger that drinks it with 1d2 WIS damage, no save
As Silver's been stated to no longer work as a test in normal shape, this would be useful as a way to test suspicions. Should cost a couple hundred GP from some backwoods NPC to avoid people demanding it of just anyone.

QuoteRighteous Infusion
This holy brew is infused with celestial energy and is the bane of undead. Drinking if causes the energy to blast from the user in a radiant burst.
Affects all Undead  in the area as if they had been hit with an attempt to Turn Undead by the PC. CHA bonus and level could be hardcoded in the potion or based on player CHA and Char Level. An evil equivalent could also be made, that would command undead
QuoteSecond Wind
Popular with enthusiastic sorcerers, this potion can replenish the power that normally only a good rest can.
Fill 3+1d2 L1 spell slots back up with spells as if the PC had rested. It's a more flexible way than wands for a  caster PC to keep being useful in long battles and DM events if they run out of spells.

Powered Milk:

A strange concoction made by an erratic wizard making use of what was ever around. The drink itself is rather nasty tasting, and generally the milk aspect is spoiled, however, remnants of magic are sprinkled inside the formula.

Daze on user for one round, a fortitude save against poison or con loss, and then the aid effect and either bull's strength, cat's grace, endurance, or invisibility.

Hairy Spider Breath:

A powerful alcohol named for the added ingredient of spider venom. The amount is small enough, but it's enough to add potency to the other wise stale water its often added to.

fortitude save against poison or con and int loss, and + 2 spot, search and listen.

Potion of Leporidae:

A shiny red potion, about the same size and shape as an average speed potion with a confusing label reading: "Leporidae Magickus". Seemingly a prank by a vengeful mage, a few many warriors found them selves dead rather quickly in a horde of trolls...

Polymorphs the player into a bunny.

Blink Potion:

A translucent silvery potion that appears to be a failed attempt at some other more powerful concoction. It can be used by the imbiber to escape some immediate danger... possibly into another nearby danger.

Teleports you 30 feet in a random direction and makes you invisible for 3 rounds (18 seconds).

(not sure on the duration for balance. Could be up to 5 rounds)

Essence of Sacrifice

To glimpse into this potion is to see into the heart of that which no mortal was meant to see, the very heart of the mists swirly within this heady concoction.  It is rumored that by drinking this concoction, the life of another can be returned to them...

Drinking the potion, voluntarily, perma kills the drinkers, no exceptions.  50/50 chance to raise a dead PC to life, even without their corpse.

Oils of Major Replication
This very rare bubbling purple brew is more of an accidental concoction–crafted from the mixture of too many lies, far too much fragmented glass, a dash of trouble, and oh-so-much flavor. It has been the cause of a number of social disasters and often helped to dupe even the most careful observer. Nevertheless it can cause a number of problematic situations including the temporary loss of control of your body. It is best drank carefully.

Effect: 10%: paralysis. 90%: Turn the user invisible, duplicate the character with a temporary henchman or summon. The user can speak through the image and move it around using the chat command and player tools. It only lasts a short time: 3 minutes?. The image's AC 10, saves and ab are +1, damage is 1d4, and it has HP 20.

Oils of Minor Replication
This rare bubbling light-purple brew is more of an accidental  concoction–crafted from the mixture of too many lies, far too much  fragmented glass, a dash of trouble, and oh-so-much flavor. It has been  the cause of a number of social disasters and often helped to dupe even  the most careful observer.

Effect: Turn the user invisible, duplicate the character with an uncontrollable image of themselves standing there. Lasts 1 minute.

50% of the time it functions as an endurance(10) potion.

Face Masher's brew - They always said you were too incompetent to actually know what you were doing with your stock of potions, yet you managed to survive for a while. Oddly, when you finally died, they found these in your pack.
(Provides a single spell from the list of Haste, Displacement, Aid, Bless, Divine Favor, Bull's Strength, Endurance, Eagle's Splendor, Owl's Wisdom, Cat's Grace, Fox's Cunning - at caster level 10)

Expert's drink - You never really understood how he did it, but now you can too. (+10 dodge AC, -10AB. After ten rounds the effect fades and you become entangled for 5 rounds)

Dram Dominicus' Cerebral Cognac

War-Wizard Dram Dominicus is famous within the inner circles of Vangerdahast's influential organization not simply for his impressive abjurations but also for his love of Arabellan Cognac. Numerous lab accidents in Suzail (attributed on the official record to simple mishaps) are reportedly the result of Dominicus' enjoyment of mixing his work and pleasure through this alchemical concoction.

How much time Dominicus has taken away from the defense of the realm in developing this potent mixture of alcohol and magic is uncertain. Regardless, he would likely defend his work on the merits of its length in the mouth and dominant floral notes.

Potion: Fox's Cunning (3), Spirits (Alcohol)

(Likely produced as a result of alchemical experimentation)

Potion of the Fallen Skies

Description:

"You hold the odd vial before your eyes and stare in wonder. The flask itself seems to be made of a rather soft and almost fragile material, something you have never seen before. It reacts to the touch, as you land a finger on it the flask waves and seems to change shape, though when you blink it's gone and back to normal.

The translucid material allows you to see the fluids, if they can be called so, that are kept inside. Colourful and bright shapes seem to be moving all about within the sealed vial, like a small universe of its own that had been trapped within.

When you remove the vial's wooden seal and down the strange substance down your throat you feel as though as if you had just swallowed a exploding star, you start to glow, and then, then it happens..."

Legend behind the potion:  “It is said the seven powerful mages once tapped into the Realms Beyond the Prime Material Plane, capturing raw essence of one of the many planes of existence, though exactly which one, is unknown. They poured said essence into a very special flask that could hold it, and with additional enchantments they made it so that when the potion would be drank, those around would see themselves pulled alongside with the drinker towards said plane of existence. However, the potion didn’t exactly worked as planned, and what actually happens is that the other plane of existence collides with the Prime Material plane and for a moment, both exist at the same place and time.”

Effects (scripting needed):

-Range of effect: 30 meter radius.

-When drank, visual effect of Planar Binding Spell upon the drinker, alongside with the Heal spell visual effect on the borders of the area affected by the potion. (scripted effects)

-When the PC drinks the potion, the plane of Ice, would exist within the Prime material plane for a duration of 5 minutes. For saidduration the ground would be turned to ice (scripted effect) and ice like creatures would be constantly brought into existence (scripted effect; ice salamanders, ice mephitis and even ice golems), being hostile towards all of the PCs in the area. If possible, it’d be neat to have a wall of ice surround the borders of the affected area, so whoever is inside would be trapped within the plane of existence for the duration of the effect.

QuoteSurgeon's Friend
"A brew made from a thick tree sap that clots rapidly in the air, this drink earned its name from its ability to allow battlefield healers a critical few moments to reach a dying man"
While under the influence of this potion, any damage that would deal more than your current HP +10 will instead reduce you to 0 HP if you are not already bleeding out.
A defence against the Gaathmar Crit or a single powerfulspell, but of no use at preventing any other damage.
QuoteThe Vapours of Torpor
"Heavy fog stirs in this flask, a mixture of Mist essence and narcotic herbal smoke. Inhaling will put even an elf into a deep, refreshing sleep."
Sleep effect for 1d3 rounds. Immediately afterwards, the PC goes into Rest mode regardless of the area.

Gutrot - Canon alchoholic drink drank by dwarven battleragers before, during, and after battle that is rumored to be more poison than drink.

A potion which gives the wearer a short term buff. Each round/turn a poison save is made (alchohol). Each time the save is passed, the buff increases in potency, but so too does the DC of the poison check against the alchohol . However, once the save is failed, the PC is knocked down for twice the duration that the buff lasted(passed out/sick/ect).  Make the buff some slight str/con buff, maybe some minor regen, whatever fits flavorfully with the concept. Extremely addictive. Addiction can be satisfied with alchohol.

Potion of Greater Distraction

When drank, 1d4+x number of exact clones of yourself appear. The duplicates are exact copies of the user save one. They can not speak, communicate, read or understand instructions of any kind. For the duration of the potion they will all run around, flailing limbs wildly, hooting, howling and hollering until subdued/slain (which makes them dissipate into nothing, leaving nothing behind), or until the duration ends. A spot check against the users bluff skill can determine the real one, modified by the number of duplicates created.

Potion of Minor Distraction

Same as above, except only one duplicate appears.

"These rare and beautiful bottles are rumoured to hold the direct favour of the gods. It is said that if in your hour of need, you beg the heavens to aid you, and drain the amber liquid greater protection shall never be given.

Warned also, that many after being blessed so directly, are brought to their knees in awe and shock, their mortal bodies not ready to comprehend the heavens above."

Once drank drinker is granted Greater Sanctuary, though when it fades, drinker is blind/deafend and knocked down for two minutes.

"This potion boosts the drinker's hearing to unnatural sharpness, even as it dims the eyes."

This would reveal the presence of hidden creatures with otherwise untouchable stealth scores if they're foolish enough to stand too close, but leave you unable to fight them effectively until the potion wore off.

QuotePotion Of the Earth
"This muddy brew is a link to the Elemental Plane of Earth, channeling its power through the user's spells"
10% Electrical Vulnerability, gain the Elemental Bond: Earth Perk's effects for 2 minutes.
Would exist in four forms. The others would be 10% Fire Vulnerability, gain the Elemental Bond: Water perk and so on.

Immunity to Critical Hits, Sneak Attack, Mind Effects, poison, disease, and neg energy for an entire reset.

Oil of Ascension
This sweet-smelling potion was used in strange "Ascension rituals" by new religious movements to bring a swift death to people who had lost all other hope. On the label is a faded smiling red skull. Time in the bottle appears to have weakened the toxic effects.

Effects: true seeing, 1d4 wisdom & 1d4 constitution drain (no save), after 1 minute 1d4 wisdom & 1d4 constitution drain (no save)

Edit: ooh. The ability drain could keep happening for a random number of minutes (e.g. d4+1) to represent the unstable toxicity.
