Title: Topic in the topic for public board posts?
Post by: Barber on July 18, 2011, 05:02:23 PM
A small thought!

Everyone is out doing cool stuff, but we may get 20 or more new posts a day on the public board, maybe half of them at the crossroads.

Why not title the thread topics, what the message is about?

I.e. "Looking for elves!"
"I am going to kill Joey!"
"Quest for the ancient socks of cyric!"

That way, Joey Cyric, who is only interested in the socks of cyric, need not read through 15 posts titled "A post at the crossroads" to find the one relevant to him?

I personally like it stating a location, since many of the notices my character would never see. I don't want to spend time reading a notice ooc'ly just to find out it is placed in a location where my character wouldn't see or have knowledge of it, so seeing at a glance where they are posted in the topic is helpful for me.

My elf, for example, never goes into the Mists End Tavern. She shouldn't know about any notices posted within there, and probably not many others in Mistlocke since she lives in the forests and not in the hamlet.

City of Mistlocke, Murdertown, and Sis Laman in one forum

Everwhere else on another.

Not everyone sees every notice, but you can handle that issue by posting at the top of the thread, where it is posted up.

I was about to make this post myself. Every once and again people need to be reminded. Thanks, Barber!

You can post the location in the thread itself.

I prefer both.

"[location] Topic of thread"

"[location] Topic of thread"

this format or deleted imo

its quite annoying to have to trawl notices to figure out if its something your character would have seen, or if your character would have bothered to read, other ones that are annoying are those that dont have a location any where in them because they might be of interest to your guy but youve got no clue if it would have been seen by the character.

That's the format i'm using since i saw this thread. I think it should be a rule for posting in the forum. Not only there but the marketplace as well

For sale [Mistlocke]
For sale! [Gasserrick's camp]
For sale [Errie of the eagle tribe]

or whatever

If no location are given, it's usually assumed anyone can read it.

And if you get this easily annoyed... maybe the forums aren't for you!

Also, small tip that works for me, but maybe not with all browsers, simply hovering your cursor over the link to the post reveals tidbits of the post, allowing you to quickly scan what you want and don't want to read.

I assume, if a location is not included, it is everywhere and is intended to reach the widest possible audience ICly as indicated within the little subtext underneath the forum post.

Public Board
"Posted on the village boards, hung in the streets, advertisements and speeches everywhere on Ymph."

Otherwise, if it is a specific location where only a certain type of individual visits then it should be stated precisely where it is located.

As such, I agree with the aforementioned format of:

[Location] Description.

Normally it isnt an issue however for about 3-4 hours a day between off peak and peak times, my internet connection slows to a crawl where it will often take 20 min or so to load a web page, so while the title issue has always been annoying it is mostly due to this issue not anything else, so perhaps my wording wasnt well thought out.

I was under the impression that you cant leave messages where your character doesnt frequent or atleast make apearences in, now the island is quite a huge place, so there are going to be places that most characters wont see or see enough to maintain public postings which is why it has been a mild annoyance, but if im under the wrong impression than i'll be happy to eat my words.
