Title: Greataxes are scary
Post by: Keeper of the White Wyrm on July 05, 2011, 06:47:13 AM
Lemme tell you a story of a world of fantasy and dice rolls. Where even the lowest level scythe wielding cretin can down a level 11 mage with one solid hit.

I and a friend were wandering through the tower of mercy, doing just dandy fine with our level six selves then we heard a mighty cry and a nightriser hero with a big fat greataxe with three attacks per round.

Well, we thought, we can do this.

There is a 5% chance of rolling a twenty

.25% chance of rolling two twenties

.125% chance of rolling three twenties in a row.

So as we charged, I fell victim to the horrid barrage of blows this hero inflicted upon me. 32 dmg, 21 dmg, and the clincher, 38.

So I sat in the fugue, terrified, then I saw my companion enter beside me, telling me of her double crit horror.

32 dmg. 28. Fugue.

I respawned, and managed to defeat the menace.

I have now a healthy, everlasting respect for the might of the greataxe. It can turn the tide with a humble 5% chance.

That is my story.
[hide=Disclosure]
This didn't really HAPPEN, but a very similar set of events did. I was critted three times in a row, but these weren't the numbers. I did fugue, but my companion managed to draw it off as I respawned, but when I did so, She died right after...

But this was a nice story[/hide]

Always make a character with a scythe to appreciate how rare and valuable a good crit is. You need to learn to fear the crit.

Telling us that this story is entirely made up robs it of any legitimacy or merit, and once more confirms your status to all who read it as a one hundred percent, bona-fide moonhead.

I have a better made up story where Aorli Brakenshield fights off a horde of zombie vampires using only the stone false teeth of his ancestor Drunur. He gets crit a few times in that story, but it's OK because it didn't happen. ;)

As always though the truth is more hilarious than fiction. I remember a fight night in the wastrel, and a L8 or so Druid with spider form crushing a couple of challengers. Some low level PC in battered chains walks up, but AHA! He's carrying a scythe! The first thing that happens in that fight is Scythe Guy gets initiative, crits, and puts the druid on the floor in one swing. IC and OOC hilarity ensues. Now THAT's comedy! It's also a shining reason why scythes are cheesy...

5% my ass. I've been double and triple crit by those too many times to have faith in nwn dice rolls.

Cheesey, pah. Scythe is the Scythe is the Scythe. It requires sacrifices.

I am a bit confused really how you would even survive until the third crit if your addendum that the story is true and you got triple crit!

Greataxe crits on NPCs range much higher than you're describing.

I was being healed by my companion at the same time was I being raped by the triple crit.

My DR absorbed a good bit of the damage as well, 6 points with warmarcher song.

<.< And Nightriser guards don't do an awful lot of damage.

You know, chance doesn't work that way. It isn't 5% of 5% of 5%, that is .125%, there is a formula, much more complicated that that, to  calculate that. And i'm pretty sure it's below .1%.

Still, it happens. How the hells does one explain it?

I got crit twice in two rounds the other day, once even in 50% concealment despite MA/PoA buffs. Shit happens bro. Of course, I've been telling people to fear the greataxe for some time now. Did you know they have the highest damage potential of any weapon, even higher than scythe? Some simple math reveals 12 x 3 is > 8 x 4. From the PC perspective however greataxes with decent stats tend to be pretty uncommon/rare, and scythes almost all have good stats to make up for the fact you need exotic to rock with them.

If you want to hear a REAL story, ask Equinox about how I beat him in our duel to the death with four critical hits in a row. ;)

Equinox has had the worst luck with criticals! I too have a story of at least two criticals in a row on him.

Crits can change the tide of any fight.

The REAL motto: "Crits are Scary." (Especially when they're against you)

Great axes aren't scary, marsupials are.

Because they're fast.

My favourite crit story was from my old server. I and a friend, both of us level 10 or so, were running through an area populated by level 3 Orcs. As we run, my friend tells me, "You know, when I was level 3 or so, I used to fear these guys. Now I just can't respect them any more."

Cue random orc with greataxe running up to him. Power Attack + Crit. 58 points of damage.

(Yes, he survived, and we killed it, but after that, he started to respect them again, at least for a little while. :) )

My favorite crit story is Rus, hands down. I don't even care that Haroth got subdued by Gregor five seconds afterwards, that nearly 2HKO made me so giddy for a while.

And this story is actually almost entirely true. There was about a three round lag between Thomas's death and mine, though. You know what's scarier than those Nightriser guards? Trying to fight that wizard before his ass casts a Devos.

Actually 5% of 5% of 5% should equal around 0.000125 or .0125% chance. I can't recall exactly how to do this from statistics but I think thats about correct.

As it stands no computer generated dice rolls are completly random, and there is commonly multiple rolls of the same number next to eachother.

Know what is even scarier then Great Axe Crits? Great Axe Crits when you have improved critical on the character for them.
