Title: Why do all sorcerers look the same?
Post by: Egon the Monkey on April 08, 2011, 12:29:03 PM
Something I've found from watching EfU sorcerers, is that some sorcerer  loot is just too good. Not in a "this shit is way OP" way, but in a  "this item is too good NOT to use" kind of way. With a couple of notable  exceptions, every sorcerer has the standard issue Skull Helmet,  Embroidered Cape and Shamanistic Leather Underpants. Yup, even the posh  ones.

The trouble is, once you have them on, if you take them off, you lose  one spellslot, even if you've already fired a few spells which for a  Wizard would lead to you unequipping empty bonus slots. This means that  when you get a bonus slot item, you equip it and then never take it off,  which means that barring DM loot, every sorc ends up with the same  gear.

I'm not really sure what to suggest though. The ideal way IMO would be if you could find items similar to the Light Gems, that add a permanent item property to equipment. Let's call them 'Blood Gems'. Checks if an item has a +1 Spellslot of that level, and if not, it adds one. These could even be restricted to use on certain types of item (Mechanically or via OOC note). Trouble is I have no idea how feasible that is.

More 1/day items would seem a better alternative to spellslots, as they could be swapped out once fired. Although then you could amass a load of them and chanin using them. The same goes for Sequencer items, which are rare and powerful as they cast at CL10.

I'm putting this here as opposed to in Suggestions as I don't know what I'd think the solution would be, and just wanted to raise why we have Standard Issue Sorcs, in the hope somone has a good idea, or anyone who wins Howland's quest challenge might have some alternative sorc gear in. it's time to break this fashion disaster! *campy flounce*

I do have to say, although I don't see this as a big deal but it is very amusing how all the sorcerers here dress exactly the same way. I wouldn't mind seeing some variety so that every sorcerer concept doesn't look like they stepped out of some tribal fashion outlet.

I agree wholely with this, Can Sorcs please get some more clothing options then : Loincloth 1/2/3/4 Would be nice if they had some more options.

None the less there are sorc robes out there, an dthey can be obtained so it doesnt mean that we need more sorc gear, just means we need to have a more public way of pointing out where you can get an outfit that has a top.

I pretty much agree with everything that has been said. No need to drag this out.

Put bonus sorc spellslots on Plate armor.

I support this idea. No idea what to change or how, I'll leave that to more mechanically minded peoples.

But I -do- like the skull mask.....

I for one, welcome our fashionista overlords, it makes spotting a sorc that much easier, so you know who to kill first. Variety may be the spice of life, but it can also cause gas.

*tongue firmly in cheek, for the read between the lines impaired*

I dunno, it may just be me but this should also be a matter of RP, shouldn't it? When I played Deirdre, my Impilturan sorceress, she refused to wear the skull mask at all because it looked like the symbol of Orcus and she did not have many good memories of priests of Orcus from back home. (Well, except the memories of them being gutted, beheaded or otherwise brutally killed, but there you go.)

As to the weird loincloth look, there you got me, a very nice DM gave her an uber sorcerer robe and it looked like that. Given the tropical temperatures and the fact that she was used to snow nine months of the year and hail the three rest, it didn't seem unreasonable to wear it. (And perhaps a bit more unreasonable to tell the DM, "Screw you, I want an overcoat! Waaaah!")

Suggestion noted, but it's always interesting to see what PCs just wear whatever loot is the best mechanically (even at the cost of looking ridiculous) vs. those who stubbornly wear that which would better match the theme.

It could be easily done. Simply make 2 copies of the gold skull mask, make them different models, re-name them, give them a generic "this mask/helmet is filled with energy" description and place them on the same loot table. Repeat with all other overused sorc items. I don't think it would take too long.
