That'd be cool...
I know it's not exactly what you asked for, but there are actual pick items, as in mining picks.
I mean Shovels, to dig. Bury corpses, or steal corpses from graveyards!
See, this just makes me wanna have Skeleton in the closet, an axe I call a shovel, and to wake up some nights covered in dirt with a new corpse in the room wondering what happened.
As for digging up corpses, I don't think that's going to be plausible, considering most things on Ymph aren't buried at their grave site. Who knows though, it just sounds like a lot of work for little gain to me.

Er. Pickaxes are also (//%22http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=77216%22) used for digging... go get one of those until shovels are put in. :P
Also:
PC BURIED TREASURE.
This was suggested once back in the days of EfU! I fully agree with it but I believe the general concensus was that people didn't want everyone to have access to persistant storage.
Could be used for EFUSS archaeology
This suggestion is.. non-specific about what exactly you want. Shovels, yes. Just simply something like a mundane rope item for RP purposes?
I think a functionless shovel would be coolish. I mean, in the setting its more wierd that there -isnt- one.
But thats like saying its odd that you cant buy farming equipment in the marketplace.
I would like to RP hitting someone with a shovel though.
I talk like this because my brother hit me with a shovel.
I hit a guy with a shovel once, knocked him out with one shot to the head. Guess I needed a +1 shovel.
I think this suggestion would be better served suggesting what you want to use the shovel for.
Actually having a shovel item in your inventory is meh. Having a command, /c dig, which would provide possible benefits in the right place (worms for fishing, special corpses, buried treasure, etc.) would be a better way to achieve the same effect, I'd imagine.
Adding a shovel item into the mix adds all sorts of odd and frustrating things, like how anyone who can't wield an axe because they lack the proper feats can't pick one up and bang it against rocks. Stupid. Very stupid. Point being, items add unnecessary and odd frustrations. Slash commands are superior.
Oh, and I would totally DIG it if Archeology provided a bonus to digging somehow.
So basically you want an entire new system to unearth buried treasure through the medium of chat commands?
Does that not strike you as verging on the unnecessary?
I dunno, it might be an idea for DMs to have a shovel. Think of all the stuff from players they have to wade through. >.>
The Necessary/Unnecessary is for DMs to decide, not I! I do not agree nor disagree. More "sandbox" items are always great.
Just a useless RP item "Shovel" like the length of rope would make me happy, tbh, Bonus if it's a quarterstaff so I can have a shovel weaponmaster.

Yes, that would be good already! Shops could sell a 'Shovel', a useless item for RP purposes. I thought it could be a weapon, but then, not all classes would be able to use it. As for the implementation of a whole new system, well, of course it would be nice, but I have no idea of how that could be, so, I won't be suggesting this.
Every race and class in the game can use a Club. Just sell a Club with -1 AB and the name Shovel.
I'd much rather have a burying/digging system than a regular item, though that would just be more work for DMs for flavor.
Burying and digging are great in a lot of avenues of RP. Burying messages, digging/burying corpses to avoid them being raised, going treasure hunting, burying your own treasure (Armor, etc, from dead people until it stops being so well known and digging it up again to use), etc.
Free persistant hidden loot mounds via shovels please. Unlimited space. I'd fill mine with harvested citizen stones.

Yeah, Small shovel. That'd do.
I think an RP item would be good, yeah.
A burial system if limited to say 1-2 items would be great for dead drops and buried loot for non-dominion PC emergency caches. Space to leave an item and a note, or a letter with money for a deniable contact. I've always wanted to, for example, do shady deals by leaving the money at a location then picking up the items later, but the persistent chests are no good as everyone knows where they are, so they're never used really. All you can do is booby-trap them for security. (//%22http://www.escapefromunderdark.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44138%22)
I'm sure it'd be a fair amount of work but the payoff would be interesting PC-driven plots and deals.
Reading this topic, I immediately had flashbacks to the Legend of Zelda games where you got a shovel and would dig up every single square of ground to find special treasures.
Anyway, I see absolutely no reason why this should be added to EfU other than flavor for RP.
Seriously, what exactly is wrong with just emoting that you have a shovel in your pack if the actual item does not exist? If you're that intent on getting an actual item for something like that, get the pickaxe that is already IG.
A complicated digging/burying system warrants more reason than 'it would be cool' IMO.

I don't feel comfortable RPing having something that I don't. Would you RP that you have a rope even if you don't? I would instead go to the shop and buy one, even if that mechanically does not do anything, then RP I'm using it. The same thing with a shovel. And that is why I suggested this. A simple shovel available for sale, with no mechanical uses.
Can I learn how to use the mining pick first? I mean, is this thing only for Rp'ing. Stand in front of some rock and type /c efuss roll mining and waalaaa. Some earth is moved but only in my mind.
