Title: Bring back Wolves Quest (here's how)
Post by: Egon the Monkey on October 08, 2010, 07:46:11 AM
This was always a quest I enjoyed as both the first part 2 one, and the "learner" point-defence quest. I'ts a great introduction to some of the novel points of EfU's quest system and I'm sorry to see it lost to IC events. However, I reckon it could be fairly trivial to return. Part 2 could be made into a quest in its own right initiated by a "Battered and Ragged Silver Ravens Scout" who can't find what happened to his company for example. Or part one could be remade to have a Farmland Refugee as the questgiver, who was trying to rebuild his home when wolves attacked.

This would be a great quest, yeah. Part one, the intro, could be a simple questgiver out by the main gates (where Samuel Drake and his predecessor used to be for the snakes quest). When you speak with him, he says that the effort to get the farms up and running again has run into difficulties (wolves), and they need people to defend what few cattle the colony has left against these wolves. Part two of it was always really fun, and I can understand the reason for the whole ranger-only part of it, but I always felt it was kind of annoying, and didn't add much. Past the first part, where the transition for part two is, there's an in-between area, where there's a few wolves to kill, and as Egon said, a 'Battered Silver Ravens Scout' who informs the party, after they've killed the few wolves there, that the rest of his crew went missing, he's not been able to get past the wolves to regroup with them and would pay a bit if the party could find and hopefully rescue the crew.

Ideas for additions to this really awesome quest:
-Make it possible to rescue some of the Silver Ravens, similar to on the Snakes Quest.
-The cattle get killed more often than not regardless of what the party does, simply because they are inbetween us and the wolves, and we can't get past them to save the wolves. I have only once, out of the dozen or so times on this quest, saved all the cattle, and that was thanks to me being an archer that could 1-hit all the basic wolves while the fighters pushed through the cattle to mop up the rest, not to mention I think we had a cleric in the party healing the cattle I couldn't get to in time. While this encourages parties to be extra prepared, being prepared to bypass such an obstacle as cattle in the way is somewhat metagaming, in my opinion. Please, move them to an area that's not in the way, delay the wolves advance (like on the orcs quest), or maybe have less cattle with more HP, so that they aren't in the way.

Johan's quest too, the necromantic supplies were pretty usefull to some PCs. Maybe just add an invisible placable outside the cave, and place another chest that always contains gold inside to make up for the lack of reward.

I think the missing girl/Johan's quest is still there. There's an dialogue placeable outside the cave.

As a side note, what might be cool is instead of Ranger for part 2, to introduce a DC12 or something Search check to find the tracks, with Ranger as an automatic success.
