Title: What's wrong with the world?
Post by: Drakill Tannan on July 25, 2010, 11:08:58 PM
I've just seen Edgar Allan Poe's complete narrations in a single book of about 700 pages sold for $13 dollars, quite hidden among other books. What other books do you ask? Twilight, the graphic novel, of about 200 pages, worth $22 dollars.

Seriously!?

Depends when the printing was, what edition the printing is, I doubt this was in a collectors store since Twilight was there.

Reprints of classics are extremely cheap because they are made for mass consumption for the public. I would think the price spot on.

Nothing is wrong with the world, the availability of classic writings are far more numerous then before and reasonable with their price.

I have that.

The first one, not the gay one.

People are stupid and they generally suck.  It's kind of amazing we're all still here, IMO.

My misanthropic two cents.

P.S. --  I own the complete works of Poe also, but I paid 17$ for it.  Nothing like an author terrified of being buried alive.

An editor that publishes the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe doesn't have to pay royalties. If they project the same amount of profit on the book as they would on Twilight, it only stands to reason Poe would be cheaper.

It would pay $50 for Poe's work. It's wroth it. People see a huge cheap book and guess it must suck "Who is Edgar allan poe anyway" they ask themselves, but when things as the twilight crap is propoted so much, people think that is good literature. A book as the one i bought should be on display on the center, and cost a lot, and people would think "ohh, this author must be important" and read it, and guess what? he is important! But instead we see the series that murdered vampire novels, wich i enjoyed much, before meyer began writing her wet dreams.

I hate her so much..

You idiots don't even know what you are talking about. Poe was a hackneyed poser whose works recycled the pulpy "woman's novel" of the eighteenth century, and not in a clever or even vaguely interesting way. People just say they enjoy his work because they want to appear cultured, and honestly just have no taste or the vaguest idea about good literature.

Twilight, on the other hand, is a brilliant commentary on both the archetypal Romeo and Juliet story and the often cliched Gothic genre that Poe so callously mined. From this base, it delves into a wealth of timeless themes: love, mortality, celebrity, religion, and the nature of man to name a few. The fact that it is written at a sixth grade reading level is a social commentary that I'm surprised more of you didn't pick up on, but c'est la vie.

I went to University of Delaware where EAP fell in the mud.

I suspect it was either alcohol or drugs.

Also in Japan there is one called Edogawa Ranpo who wrote similar stories as EAP and was a big fan.  One of the early fanboys of Japan perhaps?

I should have that book around here somewhere having bought it many ages ago.

While I agree with Calculor's perspective on Poe, to give any artistic credence to the Twilight novels is just awful.  It's just bad Shakespeare (whom I also think is entirely overrated) with a pop culture twist.  The only thing that could make it worse was if the Disney corporation made it.

Actually, I hear Disney bought the rights to a Twilight-themed amusement park ride. I think it's supposed to be bumper cars or something?

I think it's pretty sad that the folks that try to consider themselves 'cultured' need so desperately to try to hate on something as innocent as Twilight, just so they can cling to a sense of superiority and unite only under the claim they are 'logical' or have superior taste.

At the least, real men like Calculor have the ability to actually explain why one or the other is favorable or not, and leave it at that, lest those others within the topic steam with rage as they adjust the glasses that lay upon their reddened faces so eagerly sifting through the 'Escape from Underdark: Archipelago' forums.

If one chooses to enjoy Twilight, so be it. No one is forcing you to look at it. I think what's really 'wrong with the world' is how hateful jerks can enshrine their old grimy pre-twentieth century authors as literary heroes, when they are left in the dust for obvious reasons, but I digress.

Haters gonna hate, I reckon.
