Title: Messengers
Post by: TheWastesAreFrozen on August 26, 2009, 11:28:36 PM
I think it would be pretty cool if there were some messengers, particularly in the Docks and Gobsquat, that could run messages to people  or certain areas.

For example, you could send a messenger boy to the Kingsman (and in front of it) to shout off a message that would show up in similar style to a sending does now to those people in that area.

This might help the exiles and whatnot communicate or request things from allies via secret messages.

Nice, I don't know if it is even mechanicaly possible, but I support this.

It sounds pretty legit. I like it.

This has been suggested forever, even with Lower Sanctuary in EFU Classic.

Just so's you know.

And knowing is half of something.

So long as they run through an otherwise NPC-free area so it IS possible to shoot a messenger. :P

The certain area thing is a nifty idea, but I've always used an IC tell to send a message to a specific person.

Ex.: [A small halfling messenger shuffles up to you, hands you a rolled up parchment, and quickly shuffles off again. It reads as thus:] Blah blah blah blah

Works well enough if you looking to do something like that. *shrug*

I think messengers add a nice ambiance to things and would let us not use things like tells.  Not having to shoot tells to folks is a good thing.

With a dialogue option:

'hey, i'm looking for ....., you wouldn't know where to find him, would you, i've this ULTRA CONFIDENTIAL MESSAGE to deliver.
Intimidate/persuade: 'oh, who's it from?'
Bluff: 'it's your lucky day, i'm .....'

With a pickpocket option, too.

Why are tells a bad thing? It's just green text instead of white. It accomplishes person-to-person communication without having to add extra scripts to the module like a messenger system would.

That's one of the many things why sending messages through tells is a bad thing. I don't know how you'll script messsenger boys but I imagine it will take some time and requires a lot to not block the messenger's path. As well as there being very few ways of choosing where the messenger is to go. Something akin to the sending system, various boys placed around the colony for example within the Kingsman who shouts out the message given to one of the other boys scattered around the colony. Pick a boy through something similar to the boat system with various pieces of gold required. You might get lucky or you might not.

(Disclaimer: There are of course more acceptable ways you can send tells in. Asking for questions and the like, that are OOC.)

Okay, that's an example of a bad tell. It's not like having a messenger system would solve that issue. The people that send those tells are going to continue sending those tells whether there's a messenger system or not.

What's wrong with:

Talir[Tell]: [You receive a message from a local delivery boy. It is from the Armsman. It reads:] "Please come see me at your earliest convenience. I want to discuss the information you may have on the pretender Queen. You will find me at the Kingsman this afternoon."

How do you know where the other character is and can tell the messenger boy that?

I agree that messenger boys would be a realistic and cool thing, but I am not sure if we need them. You can always send another character anyway.

You can easily use familiars for this.

And you can easily get familiars by getting a single level in wizard/sorc!

It's an alright idea, but there are sendings already, and if they just go into Kingsman and shout something, how do you know there's anybody (least of all anyone you like) inside?

What if the messenger boy is killed on the way? Give it real hp and stuff like that so people can sometimes prevent that message from coming.
