Well I was thiknig, can one really see when a bard casting a spell...? I mean, where do the spells come? like a sorcerer? and can he hide it? (not speaking of mechanics) after all, it should emerge from his music, am I right?
Bards and casting
Only bardic songs come from the music itself, the actual spells are like a sorcerors (hence why bards can become dragon diciples)
Some form of music, be it singing, humming, or whatever, should accompany a Bard's spellcasting.
Verbal components are required for most spells, but the casting itself requires no music, only the bards song does, hence why if you have a bard with no ranks in perform, he can still cast spells
I'm just going on a couple of D&D novels I've had the displeasure of reading, when Bards have cast spells, it's been described with some sort of melody.
Lets face it, any bard portrayed in a d'n'd novel is always portrayed as somone who would happily sing if they were on fire. Simply being required to speak a few words doesn't mean they can't be said in a flowery and poetic way. You may notice that bards can cast some spells found on the druid, cleric and wizard spells list, yet the components for them are exactly the same, meaning that if song and dance were required, the spellguard would suddenly become a lot more interesting.
*edit* typos
well, we can all agree the mechanics are not quite right, else, we had already used the originals :P
I will study it a blittle longer, I believe a bard should be able to hide his spell casting within his magic, also, it gives more room for RP. Ofcourse bards are not immune to detection, and anyone who succeeds, lets say, in the mechanics spellcraft autocheck, should be able to recognize it.
But that is just an idea, nothing steady untill some solid explanation of the bard's spell will come out.
I've asked this question before. In our setting, if you make the spellcraft check, you know that a spell is being cast. If you do not pass the spellcraft check, you will have to go off of the observations at that current instant to figure out what is going on, and play your stats accordingly. I see no reason why someone could mistake bardish casting as a well preformed, enchanting song (which would probably be more likely to happen then some other explaination for why Big_Orc_X just suddenly fell asleep), but to someone with ranks in spellcraft, they know exactly what's going on.
The question as to whether bardic casting requires some sort of musical component is easily answered.
To the DM Q&A forum!
Bards travel the land learning what they can, is it sssooo illegal to learn a spell, wizards dedicate there lives to learning spells, sorcerers just know them, bards can fall in anywhere inbetween in my opinion, maybe they inherited there abilitys like the sorcerer, maybe they learnt them like the wizard, but lets not forget that bard spells are all buffs and theres a little bitta healing mixed in there too, so maybe, just maybe, they are slightly clerical
Balagarn's Iron Horn Charm Person Grease Sleep Summon Creature Blindness/Deafness Cloud of Bewilderment Hold Person Silence Sound Burst Confusion Fear Bestow Curse etc.
All buffs, now?
Bards are like sorcerers, with inherent magical abilities. That's why both classes can become Red Dragon Disciples.
So you cant theoretically learn to be a bard, you have to be born with it like a sorceror?
You may just discover the talent later in life then?
I was thinking, isnt there some slight reference to dune, the power of the "witches" (read it in hebrew, so I dont know the exact name), when they use the VOICE, to control and do things?
I've often thought that Bards are an odd mixture of Sorcerer and Wizard.
They have a natural aptitude for the Weave, but they use their powerful magical songs to tap into that Weave. They learn these songs from Lore gathered over time, and they craft it to fit their own needs.. or so I gather, or interpret it.
but the base attribute for it is Charisma, so it doesnt nessecerily the song, but how they sing it
Bene Gesseret, or something along those lines.
'Fear is the mind killer', and all that. Yeah, sort of divine-based bards centered around causes, controlling things behind the scenes.
