curiousity

outta curiousity how was this server like when it started?

Like a good Flan.

*edited because I was at a loss of words on how to describe it if you weren't there*

In the very early days, it was very exciting. Lots of areas were pretty ugly and kind of didn't make sense, but that was all right. No scripted quests worked, and it was really tough on the DM team to keep everyone involved and excited (particularly at some times of the day). I imagine it wasn't much fun for players if they weren't were the action was, however as a DM I didn't see too much of that.

Sentimentality is good, but I definitely feel the server is much better now than it was.

The server was a lot of fun when it was new, the scripted quests didn't run, but that just made it so that there was a DM on pretty much every quest.

kind of hard to find people though when no1 had botherd to buy a cit stone yet.

Rags, three gold pieces, and no potions.

It had lots more Sinister_Seneschal too. :(

i seem to recall CHEAP potions from the kobold outside the gate. and gems that sold Way too high to pay for them.

ExileStrife Rags, three gold pieces, and no potions.
And to dispell any negatives or disbelief, that was not a bad thing.

It was oh so good.

The constant dm luvy-duvy was great. I still look at those old posts and screenshots.

There seemed to be alot more running from monsters then too.

The firsts days in EfU were fun times for me. Even that we needed to test some quests, not all of them worked and some were nearly impossible(but I think gnoll quest changed so many times that everytime server reseted you had a new gnoll quest :) ), the underdark was deadly(characters weren't level 7s back then)(it is still deadly, but not -that- deadly)), and everything was new and tricky. It is nice to watch the EfU developing, but I can't say that those weren't the days.

I actually would like to thank DMs for keeping us happy when the server mechanics did not work so well without DMs. There weren't so many players on Euro times, and still I was involved in many excellent DM quests and challenges.

It was different back.

I remember having been level 4 and being considered quite powerful, since that was rather high end. Seeing a mage who casted fireball made you go "Whoa.. Legendary!" even thought you just knew they wouldn't be able to do it for long :) Not knowing my surroundings created some nice suspension which is disecnhanted a bit nowadays when everyone and their kobold seems to know all or most of the secret places out there..

And let's not forget all the crazy death system bugs!

Or, er, actually, yes, yes let's forget those. >_>

The highest level was 5.

There was no full plate.

There were these little DM-free DM quest areas, that rewarded people for exploring. @Areas filled with monsters, which after killing, usually rewarded with some pretty smexy lewt.

There was a plot, I recall, in which some group of characters dragged an umber hulk back to the city from exploring. Er. Were chased back to the city, rather. Back then, an umber hulk was an impossible enemy, and significantly more dangerous than they are given credit for nowadays.

It's saddening, nobody is really afraid of the Underdark anymore. Alot of the mystery of "What's outside the gates?" is gone now, with people trekking from Sanctuary to Fort Mur every day.

I had a much better time playing back then, I think. Mostly because of the massive amounts of DM love that was always present, for anyone who asked for it at any moment.

It's harder to get a DM now. At the very least, it takes more badgering in IRC and such to grab one.

I remember that Umber Hulk! Fastest character death ... created, spawned, headed for Sanctuary, and died to the Hulk as you dragged it along.

53 seconds. I'm so proud

Kotenku It's saddening, nobody is really afraid of the Underdark anymore. Alot of the mystery of "What's outside the gates?" is gone now, with people trekking from Sanctuary to Fort Mur every day.

I guess thats proved the server really has evolved - if it was RL I think that would have likely happened. I think its true for characters getting stronger too - as the citizens in the sanctary are becoming more and more and people are ganing more courage to explore the underdark.

Lets face it, theres nothing better than a causual stroll in the underdark.

EfU when it was new leaves me with feelings of nostalgia. It was awesome, I'm tempted to say I enjoyed it then more than I do now, but that'd just depress everyone... so I won't! ^_^

Well if you wish to reminisce further, take a look at this thread. It's the feedback thread from after the very first EFU prelude.

I was surprised to find that there have only been nine pages worth of posts at the general forum since back then.

I remember exploring the Bowels of the Machine with my hit points never getting over the "Injured" status, and the loot there consisted mostly of healing herbs and cure potions, nothing else. Even now when my characters step into the Bowels of the Machine, I am a bit frightened at what may happen. :)

The DM spice was excellent, DMs always had you on your toes and guard, if you wasn't you were dead. Simple as that. I'm not saying its good now, but it has changed from what I was use too.

Any magical items you got back then, you could consider them artifacts. These were the type of items you guarded and took pride in, because it was meant to save your life some where down the line of adventures. The one item my character ever got made him immune to magic missle, it was awesome. Given the low lvls of the server, this was the greatest item ever made. //Thanks again Howland :) //

All in all the server has come a long way, from all the bugs, character deaths, and plot twists. I can honestly say, I never had a bad experience nor do I think I ever will.

Keep the good times coming!

for the lin i am not gonna read all that. but now i am glad that i came to efu when i did :D :D :D dm spice for me is well is just to kick us or encourgae is to finsish a mission^.^ i must say this server i give it a 9.9 outta 10. the 0.1 is for the occasional script breakage. which i know the dm's cannot control

The beer used to be a lot cheaper.

...

The major difference was that people now go "oh, it's the underdark" which makes sense becuase they have been here a while, but when all of the charecters were new... there was not much happiness it seemed, a lot of people sat against buildings crying. I think that's something that has left even new charecters, people just get straight to fedexing.

As far as Kotenku's remark about no full plate goes.... My Beta char bought surplus full plate pretty cheap, early on (I am 93% sure).

Vruuk was still a mean bad ass.

It hasn't changed!
