This was suggested to be put up for discussion.
Playing someone called Cannonball has finally hit a problem! Someone asked Ruby what a cannon was today, and so I explained what I/she knew about cannons and i said they were powered by gun powder!!
Now, I know Cannons exsist in nwn because they are placeble objects on the aurora maker thing. But what about gun powder? I was told it has a different name and was protected by gnomes because its dangerous stuff.
If that is the case - would Ruby's old pirate ship crew been able to get there hands on this 'gun powder', weither it be through stealing or traiding?
Help me and discuss!!
Thanks
Bardic

I think the Lantan gnomes called it Smoke-powder, it's a closely guarded secret brought to them by Gond in the Time of Troubles, I believe. I guess she'd be able to get a hold of some, but I reckon it's probably rarer than most weapons. It's more likely the boats were armed to the teeth with ballistas and catapults, rather than cannons.

Cannons don't exist in NWN. Ballistas and catapults do, though.
Canon-wise smoke-powder is a very closely guarded secret. Perhaps your ship had a single highly treasured state of the art Lantanese canon, and you were named after it... it's a possibility I guess. But I'm pretty sure they're very uncommon.

im changing from Cannonball Ruby - to Lightsaber Topaz
but seriously - if the whole having the cannon on the ship is too much - then maybe the crew just named Ruby after having battle with it? (narrowly escaping ofcourse). Because it suited her character :p
But then again, having the cannon aboard would be pretty cool - she be on a feared crew like she was meant to be.

smoke powder is a much more powerfull variant of blackpowder which was "gifted" during the time of troubles. many gondish priests and engerneers have been making Blackpower for a long time as such "cannons" are part of Faerun however the weight of them and how long it took to reload them against the power of just blackpowder made it less likely that ships would use them over arbalista's and catapaults. most cannons that are on ships use Smoke Powder.
now i know i read that in one of the source books but i cannot rember which one and i know its not the exact wording but it is close :) hope it helps

your char can just call it Cannon Powder (or any other name), its RP and she can call it whatever she wish, no? :D
and for nice OOC knowledge we now know that its Smoke Powder

Hum why do you get asked what a cannonball is in the first place, it's a second name like.. uhmm..
Mostaña.. No one ever asked me what a Mostaña was, and if it would have happened I'd answer "Well, that's my name, silly. Duh."
But yeah I was kinda puzzled how one could be named after a non-existant thing in those settings but who cares if it's just a name :D :D

I'm pretty sure Gond Gunnes do exist in FR. Not quite a canon, but near enough. But I highly doubt any character in Sanctuary could justify owning a Gond Gunne.

yeah pistols are in it and they are named pistols (think american civil war period for how they look and function) though only halflings and gnomes can apparently use them (not positive on that but im fairly sure i read that) and sorry there are two kinds of powders in Faerun blackpowder (used in pistols and cannons however its rarely used for cannons because of how lacking the powder is as a propellant for large iron cannonballs) and Smoke powder (used in cannons and many other tools/weopons that require explosive force) so there are a few things there to think on.
if wanted i have a few source books in PDF format perhaps its wanted to make a databank of em
