A letter to Councillor Tyrell

Honourable Councillor Tyrell

Your service in the names of Sanctuary and knowledge is well known throughout the town. As such, I wish to lay out before you a plan which I believe will serve both well. I wish to establish within the town a library, created by the citizens and adventures of Sanctuary, to preserve city lore. This library's halls would be filled with blanks books, upon which an individual would be able to record his own sum of knowledge.

People would be free to write about their adventures, happenings and quests. I believe that in this way we would be able to record, share and most importantly preserve much of the knowledge that is currently dispersed amongst the citizens of the town and often lost when one of them passes into Kelemvor's realm.

This library, I hope, will gather for the benefit of the town a collection of geographical and ethological lore, alongside the lore of the Underdark, its sentient races and dangers in general. Important and events would also be logged for the benefit of citizens and historians both, and a record and description of magical items and such could be kept.

A schooled populace, I have no doubt, would unquestiongly benefit the city. People could learn from the experiences of others, and so be more prepared and informed themselves, hopefully ensuring the survival of many.

An establishment such as this would also benefit the various factions in the city, allowing them access to knowledge gathered by unaligned citizens, without drawing on the valuable time of their own members.

Such a project, of course, requires coin. I would ask of you to move the Council to offer sponsorship over the library, to the greater benefit of the town entire. If you wish for more detailed plans regarding it, I will gladly elaborate, either in writing or directly. I have already gathered my thoughts regarding how such an establishment could be organised and maintained.

I very much hope that this project will meet with both yours and the Council's approval.

Miss Yevastel,

I fully agree that such a project would be in the interest of Sanctuary, and will do what I can to see that the Council support the construction of such a project. I regret, however, that most likely additional sources of funding (in the forms of donations) would need to be solicited as the Council budget is already very strained. Any help you can offer with this would be appreciated.

I would also request your ideas for the structure of the library, governance, name, and other details.

Councilor Tyrell

Honourable Councillor Tyrell

I have spoken with several citizens and adventurers of the library project and have received many positive responses and much interest, as well as several pledges of aid and support.

As such, I believe the necessary funding to see the project to completion can be raised.

I have also received positive response from the Spellguard and the Archibald family, albeit there are still some details to be discussed. I am still waiting for a response to the missives I sent to other factions and esteemed families of this city, including councillor Shane.

To encourage donations I have suggested that the biggest benefactor of the library will be allowed to name it, allowing that the name is acceptable. The other contributors will also have their names commemorated in some manner, such as engraved on plaque and the dedication of shelves in their honour.

For the structure of the library, I would wish a large room to serve as the library hall, and an office to be used by the librarians. If possible, some manner of lecture theatre, which would also double as a common room and discussion hall of sorts, and an enclosed section for the more dangerous literature, would be preferable.

Depending on the number of librarians decided upon and their manner, small living quarters might also be in order.

I have been in contact with the Stouthearts of Tornbeard concerning possible modifications that would need to be done to whichever building we find, and they may be willing to offer their assistance as their contribution.

Currently, I am considering the lone building standing past the ruined staircase, when one approaches from the market. This, of course, depends on whether it is unclaimed and fit for the task.

Concerning the governance I see it fit to have some manner of council with perhaps six members serving as librarians and protectors of the library. Whoever is interested could apply for job, so long as they can demonstrate sufficient knowledge and dedication.

As Sanctuary is admittedly not without dangers, I am also considering the hiring of some few guards, to ensure order and the safety of the library. Of course, if the town wishes to and can provide such support, I am certain constables of the Civil Defense League would serve admirably in the post. The intent is solely for the guards to provide safety to the librarians, the library and its contents.

If you or your fellow councillors wish to offer suggestions or counsel regarding this project, I eagerly await it.

Quite good. I hope to bring the matter before the full Council once the Kythorn elections are concluded -- I am afraid that matters brought up at the close of a session have a way of being forgotten, while those presented fresh to the incoming new Council fare far better.

Ariwyn Yevastel,

With the new council, discussion regarding this matter will be going forward shortly. I wanted to briefly ask you your opinion on the idea of housing the library with some unused rooms and chambers within the Town Hall. Specifically, there's room to expand the small chamber that I already use as an public office into a library that will be sufficient to the town's needs. I believe there are two good reasons to do this. First, I believe the location's prominence will do much to ensure it is well used (additionally, I'd like to be able to watch over the library myself when possible). Second, a great deal of expense would be saved by not having to build or buy an entire new building.

Please tell me what you think.

Sincerely yours,

Councilor Adelia Tyrell

Honourable Councillor Tyrell.

I fully support your suggestion, and establishing the library in the Town Hall would save the project a great deal of expenses. It would also be an honor to have you watch over the library whenever your councillor's scheduel permits.

I am also interested in attempting to acquire rare or unique books and manuscripts for the library, so that they may be both preserved and offered to the benefit of the town. If you know of the existance of such, or of those who may know, I would truly appreciate the information so that I might attempt to acquire them.

Ariwyn Yevastel,

I am in fact aware of a particular rare tome that may be a fine addition to the library, although regrettably retrieving it would be very difficult and likely very dangerous. Still, if you or others would be willing to do what they can find it please speak with me in person and I can tell you more.

Additionally, I would be interested in rewarding the three best submited texts (as selected by yourself) with some prizes. Feel free to publicize this fact, hopefully it will motivate others to enter in submissions.

Adelia

Ariwyn Yevastel,

First off, the runes upon the door you discovered read simply: "I will listen."

Secondly, I regret that my proposal to set aside needed funds to establish the library has not been passed.

The following Councilors objected to the proposal, largely I believe because they felt it would not be appropriate to build a library during this time of crisis.

The Councilors who voted against the proposal are Councilor Grigor Starag, Councilor Gaeseric, Councilor Dungal Toboerski, and Councilor Archibald. I regret their decisions, but have hopes that at a later date the Council will come to see the wisdom of this proposal.

Feel free to contact them to attempt to persuade them of the value of this project.

Councilor Tyrell
