Hypocrites?

Alright, I don't post very often in these forums, though sometimes it is amusing to browse them. And so far my experience on EfU has been awsome with a few exceptions. Unfortunately, these few exceptions are persistent ones because of certain DM's. One I can identify, the other I can't.

My first incident involved the perma-death of Lorm because it was just...completely lame. I haven't reported it till now because I didn't see the purpose if it was just one bad experience.

There was a group of us in the circus and of course everything in there attacked us at once and the exit suddenly disappeared. After a pain in the ass fight, we managed to get to the house of mirrors and there were a bunch of random doors there that lead to random locations, and no two people could go through the same door. And this ended up killing off a few people and adding absolutely no depth or story to the server, or the characters. Lorm was teleported to a random ass cliff in The Spire that was surrounded by elementals and hunting spiders (not much escape from that at his level). I posted a screenshot on yahoo of that, but unfortunately the original is lost because of a crashed hdd.

The next incident that really got under my skin was today. I didn't mind my character dying, because in the end I didn't lose much. There were others however that lost a lot, simply because a DM (namely metro) thought it would be amusing to send everything left in the dungeon at us including the boss at once. Let's go over this...we had 3 swordsmen who were still hurting, 1 little dwarf who was still recovering from her FIRST death (she died 3 times total), and a few other odd characters. We were in the middle of an rp involving a lizard statue and out of nowhere everything came stampeding at us and killing us off rather quickly. Were it not for some of our higher level characters, that mission would have been lost as well as everyone's equipment. So basicly the DM made all the lower level characters even lower in level, for what seemed (after speaking with him on IRC) for his own amusement, and nothing else.

When I joined this server, I was reading rules, and I was under the impression the DM's supported RP and character advancement. What possible purpose could sending an entire dungeon at us at once serve for RP? I feel, as do many others who were in the group, that certain DM's should either tone down their own little "joy rides" and such or be stripped of what power they do have. We were in the middle of rp, getting to know eachother and/or piss eachother off, and we were killed off in about 60 seconds.

You claim that you support lower level characters, yet for the most part, in those cases, only the highest levellers stood any chance of survival. Everyone else was just cut out.

I'm rambling, probably because I'm here complaining for 5 different people, including myself.

If ya give a care about keeping decent RPers and not scaring off potentially great RPers, perhaps everyone should be more involved in keeping things in this server a little more clean and fair, and not just allow DM's to get away with lame little tricks like this whenever they're bored. We might just be players, but without us, what good is having this server up?

ThaJester (Lorm, Jant, Chana, Jesse, Higan, Tomar, etc. etc. etc.)

I would also like to point out that metro's justification was "I didn't spawn anything that wasn't already there." There is a reason you spread monsters out in a dungeon. If a group faces them all at once, they'll surely lose to sheer numbers.

If you want to make the argument "why didn't you have invis potions?". The simple response is that my character is from a place where such things aren't necessary and doesn't make a habit of carrying them. To do so without prior experience would be meta-gaming.

Also, anyone care to unban me from IRC? I made an offcolor remark, that I do apologize for. Afterall, we make remarks like that at eachother all the time, and he's the first one to get truely pissed off about it. I had no reason to suspect that making fun of metro for being "metro" would get me banned. I've made far worse remarks.

Whatever point you may be trying to make is sadly lost by your violation of the most important rule of EfU, which is to treat the people behind the screen with respect. Your decision to insult a DM in public IRC with a homosexual slur is clear cause for you to be asked to leave this server.

EfU is a challenging server, and that is made clear numerous places in the introduction and description of the server. It is intended to have a survivalist feel. Some players embrace the challenge, learn from their mistakes, and do fine. Others have an extremely hard time with the slighest set-back and take it personally when they die. The first kind of players will (hopefully) have a lot of fun on EfU, the second would simply be happier if they found a different server out there. We're not for everyone!

I don't doubt that sometimes DM spice is too difficult. If that's the case, a polite DM message asking about it is perfectly welcome. Just please be polite, angry/paranoid/accusatory complaining is a very quick way to make a DM not want to DM anymore.

I know nothing about this specific incident, but I strongly suspect it was completely reasonable. The thing is, at its core NWN is a video game and it can take some time to get good at it. But the only way to learn is to face the occasional difficulty.

Edit: Since talking about a specific incident or a banning situation is best done through e-mail, I'm moving the conceivably productive part of this (discussion about DM spice) to a different thread.
