This is an idea to keep track IG (maybe by helping it a bit OOC) of who'se dead or missing.
It could be a post in the forum, where you post if yer character is dead or missing.
but my idea was really about a stone next to stone hall, where a character in the fugue plane can decide to 'magically' inscribe his name on the stone, which could be organize to hold names for up to a 'week'.
I thought it would be a useful indicator of who is gone, to organize PC plots, and sort-of warn that THIS PC you were looking for during a long time, will never be logging again.

What's to stop Joe Murder-Victim from inscribing his name from the Fugue and tipping people off that Bob Murderer struck again?

It's more rewarding to find out what has happened than to read about it on a magical fugue stone thing. Especially in this setting, it would be a little silly to know exactly who's alive and who's dead, as it takes the mystery out of a ton of things.

Maybe a stone next to Town Hall where living PCs can write the names of lost friends, but magically writing from the Fugue? Make a Kelemvorite and get him/her to work it out with the gods.

yes it might be cool if the chars actually LIVED in the server, but the pc isnt 100% always there. I mean everyone has a life behind the game, and a 'week' of absence isnt REALISTIC, but shit it happens often, especially since school is back.
I know it isnt 'real' , i dont suggest you use this info to metagame or anything, just use it to know what happened to the people you used to RP with. you guys might talk on IRC about it all the time, I dont.
yeah sure, i thought about the friends writing the names too.. but I thought it might not work since the PC always have the last word on wether he retires his char or not, and all the trouble it would involved.
To avoid bob-murder victim, you could always tag the pc has perma-retired, which means joe the murderer couldnt be brought back.
Like I said, it could be just a post in the forum, where players who wish to inform that their char has retired can do so. something like 'post your playtimes'.
The scripting names from fugue on a stone might not sound 'realistic' , but it is a clean script, and the most important part is : it is reasonably ok to do, with relatively few 'conflicts' that could rise from players using it, and it provides 'useful' information to -help- you enjoy the server with PCs you want to play with in your very sparse free time. -wether this information is treated 'OOC' or not.

Anyone remember the death cult from Planescape: Torment, the Dustmen? They had something similar to this in Sigil. A large pillar of stone where the names of the deceased were inscribed. If I remember correctly, you could ask a Dustman to try to locate or remember a specific name for you, or for a small payment ask him to inscribe a new name to the stone.
If it was up to the PCs themselves or a specific caretaker PC to inscribe the names, I don't think there'd be any problem. Names would appear only if people knew ICly that the character was dead. Having false names or names of living PCs inscribed there could also serve to further some plots in an interesting way.

The dustmen. I love them. I think there's the book, too.. where the famous Planar saying "To get put in the dead-book", as in killed, comes from.

actually..what may be even more convenient is my Paladin of jergal, his sidekick Valanthae (monk of Jergal)or anyone else similar to them ig. Being what they are they record all death- I also was trying to get a form of Will writing to be done too. I've made posts about it before, either way it's something you can likely find ig, or start yourself through roleplay..if you wish to know who has died recently.

Why not have it in the fugue? Then there'll be no "I saw that Fred was dead. I'm gonna go hack up that guy who hated him so very much.", as you can't remember the Fugue.

What would be the point of that taking up server resources and time then? @_@

I'm not in support of this suggestion at all, to be honest. I find it silly and that the harm would outweigh the good, as far as metagaming and such goes.
But rather than wasting game resources, why not just have a thread on the forum somewhere?

Many players who take extended leave from the server, for whatever personal reasons, post in the off topic forum about their absence. With such a practice already established, not sure a seperate forum would really be necessary.
