Bobo the One Hit Wonder

Alright, I already spoke to a DM in game who said Bobo the Angry Clown wasn't bugged. I thought maybe that his weapon was updated or something, because I've battled him several times before and have no memory of him being *THIS* powerful.

The last three times I've fought Bobo he has killed at least one group member in a single hit. At the time of every fight I was a level 4 Fighter/1 Cleric with 58 HP. Each and every time I've fought him the last three times, my entire group has to actually flee the area, heal up and then come back to attack him again. This is a one on one fight with Bobo - with people who are all at least 5th level.

Tonight (September 3, 2006) my group of eight decided to do Clown Land. We chewed through all of the Clowns with only a little difficulty - most of the difficulty arising when the clowns decided to attack one of the wizards.

Then we entered battle with Bobo. At the time, I was already somewhat injured but not enough to actually require a heal - I had around 45 or 46 HP, but even so I was instantly killed in a single hit:

Followed by me, Dane Morrow ended up dead, and followed by him Alin Kennall ended up dead (who chose it to be a perma death). All of us died in a single hit with no hope of being saved, no hope of countering - nothing just instant death.

The remaining five group members had to flee the area, heal up, go invisible, go back and then get lucky by killing Bobo through a surprise attack. (All of them attacked at once.)

My question is this: Was Bobo modified recently to be more powerful, and if so, isn't he too powerful? I've read on here that quest areas scale based on the group and the level, and I have to wonder if Bobo is scaling correctly. It just seems wrong that he should be able to basically slaughter an entire group of eight all by himself. If more clowns get involved in that battle, it becomes hopeless.

During one of my previous runs with Bobo one of my group members, Jack "Stoppy" Jabberdabby says that he was hit for 200 damage when he went back in to check and see if Bobo was still standing at the door. (As in, he died as soon as he entered the area, before he even had control of his character.)

Bobo only died that time because the Ranger in the group snuck back in and threw down some caltrops to finish Bobo off. (Who was thankfully already near death.) There were five people in the group, three of which died to Bobo. (I only escaped with 4 HP after two or three normal hits.)

Please, please adjust Bobo so that he is more in line with other boss monsters around his level. My character - who is a frontline fighter, cannot hope to take more than two or three normal hits from him, and hope to live. Having to flee, heal up, attack, flee, heal up, attack is a somewhat metagamish tactic that I dislike employing, but the only alternative is to just stand there and have a total group wipe out, which is simply (IMO) ridiculous.

I really like the difficulty level on EfU, but Bobo has for some reason just become ridiculously hard. I can remember battling him several times before, and only having moderate difficulty with a less skilled group than I was running tonight. It might just be bad luck, but even so - the guy should not be able to nearly slaughter a group of eight all by himself without batting an eyelash.

Dilandau: Please don't post in other people's threads in this forum.

The NPC has not been changed for months and months. He does use a scythe, which means that if he crits it's going to get nasty. However, that is pretty rare.

Yeah, I spoke to Reality Devoid about it in game - to check and see if something was wrong with him. He said that on average his critical strikes would be something like 40 damage, and that with Bobo's Rage his normal hits should be between 12-20 or something along those lines.

On the face of things, it seems like Bobo would be balanced to go up against a group of eight and provide an adequate challenge. However for some reason, and I'm not sure why, the last three times I've fought him he's just been totally insanely powerful. Of course, I could also just be having insanely bad luck.

I'm not sure, but I would encourage DM's to log on a normal character around level 5 or 6 and do Clown Land to see if they think Bobo is over powered. It could just be bad luck on my part, but Bobo could also be scaling wrong or something. (Or Bobo is just cheating like the evil Clown he is! )

Anyway, thanks for your response Howland. I just thought I'd bring it to the DM's attention on the off chance that it was not just bad luck, and that Bobo had some type of problem.

I know several DM's have done just that. Actually, a lot of DM's have done clownland as PC's recently.

I made the Clown Land quest, for the most part, so please direct all crazed and angered comments directly to me.

Bobo has not been changed since I first made him, a long time ago. In fact, I don't think he even knows how to use his rage ability, though I did give him that when I first made the quest.

This is a very tough quest, and like with many battle situations, bad luck can lead to death. One example of bad luck would be a critical from a scythe.

All that being said, I love playing this quest as a PC. In fact, it is one of my favorite quests to play on my PC account, because it is usually a challenge, whereas many other quests end up being rather easy with a well-prepared party.

Clownland is one of the most frequently-done quests on the server. I think if the risk/reward were imbalanced, it wouldn't be.
