WHy worship dead deity's?

Isn't ibrandful dead? why do people worship a dead god? this is so confusing

Jesus. Out.

Very briefly. When a god dies its portfolio passes on to another god. If that god accepts the portfolio, the worshippers of the now dead god serve the other god. In case of Ibrandul, Shar killed him during the Time of Troubles, and worshippers of Ibrandul now serve Shar. The thing is, nobody knows Shar killed Ibrandul, so while Shar does indeed grant spells to Ibrandulin clerics, all the clerics think they get them from Ibrandul.

Very directly! No one knows Ibrandul is dead.

Not even Ibrandul's priests. Its a big, big, big, big, big secret.

I'm scared now.

So they Worship Shar? Why doesn't Shar do evil stuff?

Why does Shar sound like Sharess?

Doesn't Shar live in Chult?

Confuzzled.

This thread can be slapped with all manner of stickers. FOIG, going horribly off topic, wtf-osity.

Plenty of people worship dead deities, such as Myrkul and Moander, knowing full well that they are "dead." This comes from the term "dead" being rather loose when applied to deities. As explained in the Faiths of Faerun section of the forums,

Mr. Cheez-It The constant clash of deities also ensures a steady supply of dead deities whose temples now lie in ruin about Toril. Moreover, death doesn't necessarily end the career of a deity of Toril. The possibility of resurrection always exists, as evidenced by the recent return of Bane. Small cults dedicated to the resurrection of one lost deity or another appear everywhere in Faerun. Sometimes the deity is beyond reach of such cultists or never existed except in myth, and its adherents receive no divine backing in their endeavors. Other times, a dead deity retains enough power to provide divine backing to a handful of worshipers. Occasionally, another deity masquerades in the guise of a dead deity, in hopes of expanding its portfolio.

Why call a deity "dead" if people still worship him and he can still grant divine backing to a handful of worshippers? I'll let you ponder that one.

Furthermore, the fact that Ibrandul is dead (or is he?!) is not common knowledge at all. Oroborous summed that up pretty well.
