It's been quite an annoying issue to me for some time.
I would really like to see a wider selection of dyes available in game for clothing customization.

Cail needs to look his shiniest.
Just a new pair of pants, thanks. >.<
Less dyes! I think shops should just sell brown and grey. It's a survivalist community, not a fashion show.
I'd think Rhail would sell the more exotic dyes at inflated prices. Afterall, he IS a fashion show.
The issue I have is when even the colors that -do- make sense and are easy to create can't be found or sold. As it is, it's my understanding that the module does not have any custom dyes whatsoever. There should at least be the option of getting something between a light shade of grey and black, you know? And I can't get that. "Dark Grey" is practically white, for crying out loud!
I'm not suggesting making bright yellows and pinks and greens and other flamboyant colors (although I'm really not opposed to that). I'm suggesting a greater variety of the shades there are, at least.
The issue mostly comes down to all the DM's either working on projects or DMing plots, so dyes being a low priority.
Blame Bioware for the weirdly named dyes. There are dye packs out there that aren't as messed up. Maybe I'll hunt one down, and put it together.

I agree with all three!
I think that there should be the "basic" dyes (browns, greys, blacks, bleach, etc) available in stores around town, but no others.
Ghail could sell a limited selection of more exotic leather dyes at highly inflated prices.
Finally, bright or colorful dyes would be available only as ambient loot, so they would be rare but possible to find if you're rich / devoted enough.
Perhaps there could also be quests like "Escort a Dye Caravan" or something where you could get dyes as a reward?
Dyes will also be part of the herbalism system.
actually to be fair even the most primative societys were able to make a wide selection of shades and colours of dyes so if a primative cave man can do i see no reason why people in sanctuary cant make or sell them
Primitive mankind lived on the surface, where the plants which yeilded the dye were plentiful.
I like Arkov's idea make all the dye's crappy and make colours like rainbow, DM drop or VERY RARE.
I think it is a good step in a good direction.
Efu_Darkness2 I like Arkov's idea make all the dye's crappy and make colours like rainbow, DM drop or VERY RARE.
read as very rape lol wtf
Well, yeah, I want to see a decline in the variety of dyes, just to mess stuff up.
Being one whose immersion isn't broken even if there's a vast amount of different dyes available, I have to agree with Kotenku's original post. If nothing else, I'd like to see accurate descriptions for the dyes, as Oroborous said. It's relatively annoying to waste a bunch of money on for example "dark green" dyes and then get a bright color that's nowhere near what you had imagined.
An IG sample system for the dyes would be nice, if possible.
I hate on both Thrawn and Arkov for their advocating brown and grey only, and the rest of you that agree with them.
its true that primative cave dwellers lived on the surface and used plants to make dyes but i hardly think its a great leap of the imagination to believe that there would be plants in the underdark capable of being used like this as well (after all the drow have to be using something for the tattos and warpaint.) My other point is wouldent it be quite dull if evevryone walked around looking exactly the same after all theres only so many face and armour types to chose from and colours is another way to make everyone look slightly diffrent
I agree, although it would make more sense to have ghail sell the exotic dyes (though I think the prices are fine as they are).
Ladocicea I hate on both Thrawn and Arkov for their advocating brown and grey only, and the rest of you that agree with them.
I'm with Ladocicea. You can make a wonderful plethera of dyes from fungus, sea weed, snails, etc. There's no reason the Underdark can't be colorful and pretty.
There are glowing purple crystals, nasty yellow fungus, bright red poisonous things that slaughter you like you were a baby in a fire ant colony. You can make a dye from any of those.
If the ancient Phoenicians could make the most beautiful dye ever developed out of snails; I'm confident the resourceful and magical people of the Underdark can bypass brown and gray.
I'm making a major revision on dyes right now. I can't get any quests to work...might as well work on something else.
Less dyes or more dyes doesn't bother me. Just a decent description of the supposed color would be a nice change. When I first started on this server, I wanted a true green set of leather armor. Much to my dismay, the "Greens" were far more like turquoise. If you want a basic green, you have to settle for turquoise or some pastel/neon green. The names of the dyes are ridiculous.
Just been over the new die system and (with no offence to Thrawn) i really dont like the new system if anything its actually more confusing. I mean die 009 dosent even tell you what colour it is. Also dont like the severe cutting down of choice of colours
How to use the dye pallette:
The image above is the palette for dyes in nwn. Generally what you see is what you get. Top left is 000 and right one is 001.
The dyes shouldn't be named by number. For some reason the dye names didn't save. That is being corrected in the next version.
Another thing about realism - when your playing with chemicals ( in this case dyes) the colours you obtain from the reaction doesn't follow any rationale relative to the reactives. An example - quite a few acid/base and redox reactions, which I think would be quite common with the fabrication of dyes, will give out fancyful colours. And you can get quite a lot out of simple materials like stone (because of the different metals inside them, they way they react, etc)...so the only grey and brown dyes isn't that rational either.
I hate to say it, especially because effort has been put into the new system, but the old one was fine. Maybe it'll turn out to be fine in the end.
I'm not happy with the new system. It's the brown/gray rubbish that was threatened from the beginning. I'm with Oroborous, Aekula and Ladocicea on this one: it's quite possible to get colorful dyes from what's available in the Underdark. At the very least, it *could* be, and I think that most people dress depressingly enough without forcing everyone to be drab.
I have to agree. I understand the motivations behind it, but I think it crosses one of those lines between what is "real" and what is "fun". It may be more real for our characters to have to eat three times per game day, it may be more real to force our character to have to go to the bathroom, and it may be real to force our characters to sleep at least 6 hours every game day, but none of those things would really be fun. I think this idea falls roughly into the same category.
Although my reasoning behind it isn't so much for fashion purposes, but for the ability to have uniforms and what not. For example the colors of House Toboerski: Red, Black and Green.
I suppose the DM's could just make us uniforms and give it to all the members, but if that is done what is the point of this system?
It would be good, I think, to have uniforms given out, just like faction gear. You don't dye faction gear, nor would you dye your own uniform. Whether or not this is the goal, I think this a step in the direction towards 'back in the day' where the server had a much larger survivalist feel. And I like that.
From what I understand, dyes are still going to be available, but just much more uncommon. If your character wants to stand out with green silver and gold attire, it's something you can strive for now and work in game towards. Appling for some starting colors to help your characters back story probably wouldn't even be out of the question, in my mind.
A huge portion of the population, including many of the PCs, in my mind, aren't extravaganzilists, any would be perfectly fine with the dreary colors that are available. It's an ex-slave town, after all. Those who stand out, have a reason to, and now just the way they look is factored in to a much greater extent.
People identify colors with things, and naturally make assumptions. In real life, we see green camo, we tend to think army (for those USA'ians among us). In game, bold black, vivid red, and prestine silver trimmings? Well that's probably a spellguard. That crazy southart clan armor? They're southart's. When you have a good reason to be colored like that, it makes it one level of magnitude more fun to be that way. If person_x and person_y just buy some dyes from the store and dye their clothing to look sorta, or exactly, like spellguard or southart appearal, whether or not they are intending it, takes away from what other people have worked towards in my mind. And identification by colors then becomes cloudy and ambiguious.
So now, you're a closet-follower of Gurmplezilla, the legendary wearer of a blue white and green breast plate, stuck in this dreary town of brown, black, grey, and off-white. If you suddenly want to rise from the shadows, you probably will want to work on your own image. Work towards finding those special colors to make your crazy diety proud. Then, after you do, preach, and get more followers. Then get more colors. Now you've got a team of blue white and green colored crazy faces, and people are going to know what your deal is, because you're unique. And -special-.
And we know that everyone who follows Gurmplezilla wants to be special and unique.
I think we can all agree that the most popular color is black. I like what thrawn has been doing with the names. Things like "Deep Hound" and "Rothe Dung" are great and appropriate. More drab colors make more sense. After all this is kinda a shit town. But after it has exsisted for as long as it has I think more decent colors would apear. I believe the dyes as is are a work in progress. Like, I havent seen any metal dyes around in the last update I saw. I know Thrawn has a plan, he always does. Witht he more drab thing as a whole, I am torn. It makes sense. On one end I like it, because people will be more blended together. It will make chasing criminals harder, identifying people harder, etc. I am worried for the same reasons though. We'll see!
Peronally (and again no offennce to Thrawn) I believe in the theory of it aint broke why fix it. I honestly thought the old system of dyes was fine (maybe wth a little editing of the names)
Times like these I'm glad I never dyed my white/blue splint mail. I just got a new blue cloak, too. :) I'm now fancy!
What - wait? DM's already give out Faction Uniforms? I didn't know that. I spent over 800 gold on dyes trying to make my armor look decent, and I still turned out looking like a rejected Christmas tree ornament.
But hey, at least I'm unique. When you see an ugly green cape flapping around town, and are reminded of a ninja turtle it can only mean one thing - it's Melrick!
Actually, though the colors do grow on you when you stare at them long enough. Either way, I need to request a Toboerski Uniform. If any kind DM's read this and see me around in game - send me a tell. You'll know me - I'm the one that looks like a rotten water melon.
There isn't a Toboerski uniform! Its why I have a bright neon green suit.
(interjection)
Toboerski uniforms (as per what you sent us Oro) have been in the mod for weeks and weeks (since from whenever you sent them to us), I thought you just weren't handing them out until the characters passed their trials. However, if you're ready for them to be given out a DM should be able to help at any time.
Back on topic, but really--the dye selection is just terrible now. I don't mind paying over priced amounts for dye; but its nice to have a character that looks different from the others on the server since there are not that many other ways to make yourself easier to notice on the screen even.
As I've pointed out, there may be a "survivalist" feel to the Underdark, but that hardly means no one knows how to make a decent dye. Hunter-gatherer societies could make a very wide range of dyes; and I can't fathom any reason to not have most colors in the toolset available--even if you're paying 200 gold plus for them.
I demand black dyes.
Honestly, it can't be that difficult to make ICly. And if, for some unfathomable reason, you decide that it is, why don't even Ghail or Edrzyn sell it?
I'm so disappointed.
Thrawn has been out for a while, so I went ahead and returned a lot of dyes to the module as well as an improved Ghail store.
I do certainly belive that every color should be available, and understand it's one of those things that players place a lot of importance on. If there remain any major absences of colors please let me know.
Howland you rock. It sucked have to choose between Crap and Dark Crap
The new dyes are much appreciated, but it is the Ghail dyes that I am currently concerned about. At the moment, all of his dyes are leather dyes. I believe cloth counterparts for his current colors would be greatly appreciated. Or, if it is desirably to have one or the other, cloth dyes there make more sense, as most of what he sells is cloth based.
Most of what he sells should be leather based. If it's not, that needs to be fixed. Cloth dyes are available elsewhere.
I found a really cool dye in normas store that really fit my characters plague bringing look, the dye was call ghoul skin and i cant find any more existance of it or any green dyes besides the dark green that comes out blue
any Dm help would be appreciated
I'd like to see RUSTY metal dyes sold maybe in sewer town or some run down shop in lower/auction area
"Big Joe's True metal finish" - translates to Rusty Metal #3
"Tom's Polish" - Rusty metal #4
"Essence of mandarin" - Rusty metal #5
"Ooze #5" - Rusty metal #2
"Ochre Jelly Extract" - Rusty #1
etc.
He may be some shiester that tries tomake out they are really good when they arent, (even though the player actually CHOSE the rusty effect)
"clean your coins!!!, or drink it as a beverage, spread it on your armor, SO many uses!!"
