The Tigereye mercenaries were eliminated last night. This creates a major vacuum in Lower Sanctuary, as well as a security risk of unimaginable proportion.
What occurred is as follows;
1). A fire broke out in Lower Sanctuary's canal ward. Reports indicate the warehouse that caught fire contained supplies for the Tigereye mercenaries.
2). The Red Smiles were implicated in the attack and the full Tigereye force mobilized to crush them. The Red Smiles, supported by several dozen armed citizens became beseiged near their 'bar' in Lower.
3). The Captain personally led the assault, after gathering a number of adventurers and requesting the aid of the Toboerski Knights.
4). Our Knights broke through the Red Smiles lines and assaulted their base. We eliminated a wizard, dwarf, and human who appeared to have been the main leaders. Strangely, we noted there were no Tigereyes still with us.
5). Exiting the compounds lower floors we encountered Tigereyes battling one another with adventurers joining in trying mostly to defend themselves in the chaos. We found the Captain dead, not far from the body of a Tigereye named Wilks.
6). Wilks was the leader of a group of mutineers who had made deals with the Red Smiles to stage an uprising while he killed the Captain in order to take control of the Tigereyes.
a) Wilks was betrayed by the Red Smiles who slaughtered the mutineers.
b) Some memebers of the Sewertown community took part in the slaughter of mutineers including an unnamed dwarf that wears black leathers. There was no official aid from Sewertown to the Red Smiles; they were ordered to remain out of the conflict by their leader-a woman named Gran.
c) My knights remained to battle the Red Smiles and to disperse as many citizens back to their homes as could happen to reduce looting and fires.
7) Some few Tigereyes regrouped, perhaps 10 of their former numbers. They attempted to take the battle to the Red Smiles who had regrouped after the initial assault.
a) Two brave Tigereyes held to their post at the canal gates. They remained through the entire conflict; holding their post to ensure nothing attacked the city. I expect they may still be there.
Cool With the Tigereyes overwhelmed we required reinforcements. The city's main stairwell had been destroyed by an unknown party. I traveled through the wilds to reach Upper Sanctuary and alerted the Watch and Spellguard of the situation and along with more of my Knights and men; the Watch and Spellguard entered Lower to combat the Smiles.
9) Sergeant Durris led the assault against the Smiles. Many were eliminated by this combined force but our losses were substantial.
a) Witnesses report that the leather armored dwarf from Sewertown mentioned above helped the Smiles leadership escape by giving them potions of invisibility.
b) During this time, an unknown individual entered the Tigereye's fortress and removed or burned all their paperwork, books, and weapons while slaughtering the few Tigereyes who had remained inside.
c) Several Tigereyes fled the mercenary force. Some have been seen in Fort Mur and in Sewertown.
10). A party traveled to Sewertown to ascertain their role in the conflict. We were welcomed coolly and informed that they had been warned by men from above to stay out although Wilks and the Red Smiles had made attempts to garner their support.
11). At this time, I noted the Tigereye fortress ablaze and several nearby buildings. Groups of Stoutheart dwarves and adventurers were at the scene watching and I urged them to put the fire out.
a) The Stouts performed amazingly well putting out the flames.
b) This is when I learned that the Tigereyes inside the fortress and been killed and their supplies stolen, their papers burned.
1). The Tigereyes lined their walls with the severed heads of citizens they had killed. Many of whom I knew personally, and am unaware of ever facing any charges of any criminal nature. Some still bore expressions of surprise on their faces, as if they were struck down without forewarning.
12) With the streets now calm due to the efforts of the Watch, several Stouts, and my Knights most parties returned to Upper. A handful of still living Tigereyes were to be seen, but their loyalties and intentions I do not know.
13) Councilor Shane made an appearance at this time. His first thoughts were to calm the citizens. I informed him of the unguarded gates and potential for further riots below, he was unconcerned but did use the opprotunity to insinuate that I was seeking to take control of Lower Sanctuary by insisting we move men below to instill order.
a) Sergeant Durris informed us the Watch had no men to spare.
b) Leaving the gates unguarded was unacceptable. I positioned my Knights there. The fear is that fleeing Tigereyes may alert foes to our weaknesses, leaving Lower entirely unprotected due to the elimination of the Red Smiles, many rioting citizens killed by the Tigereyes and the Watch, and the vacuum of the Tigereyes themselves.
c) The Thane of the Stouthearts refused to put any of his men at the gates. The former Tigereye Amolef urged him even more strenuously not to take part in the protection of lower Sanctuary.
d) A large force under command of my knights, led by Aspirant Melrick personally reinforced the Lower Gates. Many adventurers, and to my pleasure several extremely honorable Stoutheart dwarves joined them.
e) I personally scouted through the wilds as far as Fort Mur to ensure no hostile forces were coming towards Sanctuary before releiving the new canal gate guards since I felt the situation was now within a semblance of control.

Sir Dungal Toboerski
