armor proterties and crafting

i noticed armors or cloth with properties given by thier color, look etc. is it ok to change those items, color them, and yet, keep thier bonuses?

for example subtle tunic. its black. helps you hide, though if you color it white (or any other brither color) it shouldnt keep the effect. if you change the parts of it (craft armor), it should*edit: shouldnt* keep the "move silently" bonus.

im not sure this post suppose to be here. its a question to dms, though.

If people want to change their armor, let them. Why should a subtle white tunic be any more viewable than a subtle black tunic in the Underdark, where heat is what really gives you a more visible appearance thanks to most creatures possessing infravision...

We're not going to make the system ruin peoples armor bonuses just because they change the color or the appearance, no.

I would say you should avoid modifying plot items however. When you have armor called "Azure Armor" it doesn't make much sense to dye it red.

i never said a system should be built, just to notify people, and remind them its not logic. yes, most of the creatures have infreavision, but myself, as a character, cant see someone with bright blue suit which helps toy to hide...

if a dm, by chance watches some not very logic armor, perhpas its better to worn the player, or change the armor.

As Thrawn says, I would, in general, avoid modifying magical items.

But what both NC and Thrawn says stands.

NC has pointed out that a white "subtle tunic" and a black "subtle tunic" are both subtle. The tunic is subtle whether or not it is black or white. But a White Tunic is not a White Tunic if it is black, in the same way an Azure plate is not an Azure plate if it is Red, or a Crimson plate is not a Crimson plate if it is blue.
