The diary of Rupert Founderson

My name is Rupert Founderson and last night I killed a wizard to save the life of a demon and a masked man in a bar. 15 feet away was a minotaur who was the bouncer and I don’t think most of the people inside have ever seen the sun. Now I have some armor and some gold and some weapons and for the first time since I gained my “freedom” I don’t think I will die tomorrow.

My name is Rupert Founderson and I don’t know how old I am or who my birth parents were. I don’t know where I am from and I don’t know how to get home. I know the name of a hundred gods and every night I cry myself to sleep and beg them all to send me home. My name is Rupert Founderson and till this hell began, I never once in my life remember not being in the city of Waterdeep. Till this hell began I’ve never seen a man die or even killed an animal, I had never once in a fight and I had never hit a person in anger. Before this hell began I have never held a weapon larger then a butter knife.

My name is Rupert Founderson, I am taller then almost any other man and weigh more then almost any other man and have the body of a savage.

My name is Rupert Founderson and I don’t want adventure or glory, I want a boring life, I want to marry someone and raise children, I want to be happy and be completely common and forgettable in the eyes of history.

I want to go home.

Paul Founderson, the man who raised me was adopted as well, he never told me where I came from but it is not too hard to guess. My father must be an orc and my mother some women.

Paul raised me as his own son since I was a babe. He owns a bookstore in Waterdeep and he taught me scribe work that was his trade. I grew up reading more books then most people will ever see and all I want to do is go home.

There are many different kinds of people in Waterdeep and many travelers. Humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, gnomes and stranger things come through the city so often that few people seem to take much notice of me. I’ve always kept my head down and been polite and no one has ever bothered me.

There are other… people like me in Waterdeep too but most of them are stupid. It is illegal but there are slaves in Waterdeep and slave traders do a lot of business. Sometimes people like me disappear, and there are always rumors the slave traders take them.

There is always someone selling something in Waterdeep, even in the later hours of the night. Paul always said to be careful when I go out at night but we were out of some of the inks we needed so I went to buy them.

I never got to the market. The last thing I remember on the street was something hitting me hard on the back of the head and the cobblestones. I woke up in a cage in the underdark.

I was brought to a slave auction. All this time since I was captured I did not talk because I so afraid. They thought I was an animal because I would not talk so I was sold for very little.

I was bought by a drow wizard named Master Teren. He bought me to experiment on me magically.

I was brought to Master Teren’s estate and strapped to a table with many knives next to it and left awake. He prepared to kill me. I cried and finally I talked. I told him I was a scribe and I begged him to let me live. He laughed and laughed and told me an animal as savage as myself could not possibly know how to write. I cried and begged him to let me live and I told him it was true I was a scribe. He laughed and said if I could write my plea to him he would let me live.

One of my arms were unstraped and one of his other slaves held up a piece of paper and put a quill in my hand. I wrote in elven “Please Master Teren let me live.” He was surprised and he had his other slaves unstrap me.

Master Teren was amused that someone like myself could learn anything of wisdom.

At first I did scribe work for Master Teren's household. He had a huge library and loved to collect books. He frequently called me to his side to tell him stories of the surface and he seemed to enjoy them. Since he took me off the table, Master Teren was always very kind to me.

Life was not as hard as most slaves lives. I was not always afraid becase Master Teren was a powerful drow wizard and I ammused him. The other slaves in the household and his guests left me alone. Eventually I did much of the accounting for the estate.

Master Teren had an apprentice named Sloren who always treated me cruelly, he said it was not proper an animal should know of learning. Master Teren never did another cruel thing to me since he took me off the table and Sloren was jealous for Master Teren’s affection for me.

Some money had gone out of the estates accounts to a group of assasins that Master Teren had hired in the past. Sloren was the one who authorized the payment, in the past Master Teren was the only one to ever pay them. I was afraid Sloren was gong to kill Master Teren and I the Master this, he laughed and said I did not have to worry.

The next day, assassins killed Master Teren.

I took some gold and fled Master Teren’s house that night and was able to escape.

I wandered around the underdark for a week and was very afraid. Eventually I found a city of slaves and now I live there.

I spent 9 years in Master Teren’s house.

After the first day I never had any trouble in Master Teren’s house but there is no one here to keep me safe.

I am afraid I may make more people angry because I have learning, so I pretend to be a stupid animal. I bought an axe and some armor and practice how to use them, but I do not like them very much.

I just want to go home.

I want to go home and hug Paul.
