to Contego the Associate

[left with Spencer at the Rock Bottom, the script is overly neat and precise, recognisable as the Scriveners]

To Associate Ferrington,

Thank you for taking it upon yourself to grant me a test by which I might gain entrance to the Associates myself. I hope you find the following satisfactory.

I have spent some time in the strange room in Dunwarren you showed me, and have come up with the following hypotheses.

1) The locked chamber is some kind of a multi-location teleportation device and the panels on either side guide the location of the teleportation.

HOWEVER, seeing as the orb in the other room acts as such a device, this seems unlikely. For why would they svirfneblin use different technologies for the same purpose?

2) The chamber alters the properties of items placed therein, once again the panels controlling what kind of properties.

HOWEVER, the chamber is particularly large, and any normal items placed therein could easily be up to humanoid or even larger shape.

3) The chamber is connected to other svirfneblin machinery such as the animatrons. I find it quite likely that it acts as some kind of recharging/animating device. Run down or newly constructed animatrons are placed within the chamber and animated through the operation of the two panels.

WHY TWO PANELS? I feel hypothesis three makes the most sense of the two panels, as the only reason I see the need for two is perhaps simultaneous operation as some kind of control mechanism. Animatrons being powerful beings, it would make sense to require multiple authority to animate them.

This is all I have come up with. I once again hope it is to your liking. I may be contacted at the Rock Bottom when you see fit.

Sincerely,
