This is just stealing Freit's idea mentioned in the thread below on getting killed by *spoilers*. But it is such a neat idea I thought I'd steal it and list it alone...
Is there any way of scripting it such that if you are killed by any of the big three surrounding races, that there was a chance, even just a slight one (10% say?), that you didnt go to the fugue, but instead got captured?
Captured players would be out of the game, until such time they were released. That might involve captive trades, buying them back, sneaky slave raids or any similar shennangans that the players or DMs can think up.
These "twice free" slaves might have some sort of stigma or status attached to them on their return, and might make fun conduits for DM plots regarding their prior owners.

This would be amazing! I'm not sure how people would like being out of the game indefinitely though.

That would be great! Although it'll be pretty hard to get prisioners back depending where they are, might need to send a DM a tell before you go on slave raids so they can shout that a slave raid is about to occur so everyone can log in their captured characters

It's better than dying Metro!
There might even be ways for them to escape...

This is a good idea but really the short of thing which needs DM oversight to work.... something like this can't really be scripted, can it?

THis would be very fun, yes. Almost enough for me to think about going within 3 miles of the gates again 8)

This would be best done with a DM, but there's certainly nothing to prevent that happening!
And I have in fact run similar things like this before.

Very cool idea! Maybe it could be expanded to the gnolls in the mines. They capture the loosers, and when the next party does a successful raid, they can find the captives, sitting in the cell with the duergar daughter.
Or if there would be an option to negotiate the release of these prisoners, for a certain amount of ransom...
Generally it would definitely improve player experience, if not only death were the only option in a failed quest. Capture suspends the character for an indefinite perid of time, and can cost a lot of money for the ransom, but would make the XP loss at death avoidable. A nice option to have.
Not to mention, that it would incentivise players and charcters to get friends, to let them know what they are doing (so they can go and find them if turning out to be missing in action), and get the proper IC reactions on evil or sociopath character from the community ("that bloodthirtsy jerk can rot in whatever hell he dug himself into, I don't care" like a way).
Just brainstorming/adding my 0.2cent... I hope it starts flowing the creative juices of the DMs. :)

Or, there's a set slave trade location (Fort Mur comes to mind) where silly adventurers are sold and can be rescued/bought.

If there is a zone within each races 'lair' where P.O.W's were usually kept, you could theoretically have them just spawn inside that area instead of the fugue.
The area could be somewhat challenging to get to for the rescue party, but I think if it was scripted to land your ass in that P.O.W. holding pen, then technically, the whole thing could be run WITHOUT a DM which would allow for more of these rescues to happen.
The script could perhaps additionally include removing the captured party from the team and a system message in the combat log that says 'PLAYER has been CAPTURED by XXXXXX"
I also don't think you should live forever while in captivity. There is a good chance that the prisoner will die while being held. Mostly because they will have poor conditions, be severely wounded or have been stricken with poison, disease or other debilitating conditions.
I do think that many of the DM related aspects can be dealt with without a DM, and I believe that if someone dies in captivity, they get sent to the fugue though after some point, permadeath would likely be a good option as people might not come to rescue you.

Just lie in some ketchup or hide underneath your bunk and escape.
Metal Gear ftw.
