vital stats

I just wanted to drop a quick note of discussion about people's vital statistics being listed in their descriptions.

refer to https://efupw.com/efu1-forum/topic/37/370/vital-statistics/index.html

I feel perhaps not a lot of people when doing this know the average size of the race they are dealing with, especially with regards to humans and half-orcs. Humans in the FR are shorter on average than us today (Illuskans being the tallest have base height 5'2", Half-orcs base height is only 4'10"!). Someone who is 6 foot would be UNUSUALLY tall. Taller than that might be considered freakish. 7 foot would almost certainly be considered giantkin.

My issue here is whether or not we should roleplay an appropriate response to reading such a stat when we can't be sure the person intended to make their character obsecenely tall because of a lack of knowledge. I would feel bad walking up to a 6 foot human and teasing him for his ridiculous height IC when OOCly the player didn't know the FR standards.

This occured to me not just from reading other peoples descriptions, but I was creating a half-orc for play later, and wanting her to be imposing I was bout to give her a height and weight... but THEN, I realised if I said she was imposing and I used the base FR statistics... almost EVERY half-orc on the server who lists stats is MUCH bigger than her.

So I just used a verbal indication of her presence as opposed to a stastical one.

Opinions?

I like it when people show me who they are, rather than me reading about who they are.

Star Wars Galaxies character creation IS wonderful, isn't it?

A shame Neverwinter Nights doesn't allow you to adjust your avatar height, meaning people either have to tell you how tall they are or put it in their description - both of which involve reading. :)

Edit: Added smiley face to show I'm teasing.

I believe that those base heights are the minimum heights, not the average. You take the base height of the race and roll certain dice to add onto the base if you wish to randomize your character's height. This is the same for the weights displayed. So for a 4' 10''who adds on several more inches, 6' 0'' is not out of the question.

Secutor is right.

Humans in the Realms are the same basic height as modern humans.

On the other hand: I just roll my eyes when another "giant" 7'5", five hundred pound half-orc walks by because I'm pretty damn sure half-orcs aren't normally that big but most the ones I see are in the Realms. Then I procede to ignore it just like I ignore the "you feel a chill to the depth of your soul when you meet his gaze" type of stuff.

Unless I need to describe your character of course! Overall, its not a big deal to me, I just prefer people tried to keep within the normal range for a race. I mean, if your halforc really is 7'5" and five hundred pounds which is well outside the norm for the race, I'd like it to be for a reason (IE his grandfather was an ogre, he was magically expiramented upon, illithids grew him in a test tube).

The statistics listed were merely base heights and weights, so I have added the appropriate modifiers for each race and gender.
