I am suggesting that Shelgarn's Persistant Blade get some kind of DR. Its a floating metal dagger, and rats manage to chew it to pieces. It should cut through rats at least like butter.
If -/5 DR is too high.
What about giving it +10 hp per level? Or something equivalent to Stoneskin so it soaks the first X non +1 damage? Anything so this really awesome visual spell stops looking like a wet noodle with little use.

But then when certain undead creatures and mini-lizard folk use it, we'd get our assed kicked by it.

It's not like the spell itself causes much damage, it just gives it some lastability, which I think is a good idea.
Anyway, if you're worried about the danger of summons, kill the summoner.

Why not actually make the graphic into a flying noodle? Seriously though, more lastability for it would be good.

Problem is undead, typically skeletons have some form of damage resistance and they're the ones summoning these little daggers so if you have a character that can't get through the DR of the summoner, you're probably not going to get through the DR of the dagger.

djspectre that is one of those objections that hurts my head to think about.
Hit the skeleton with a club. It dies fast. If you can't kill the skeleton in the first place, then Shelgarn's Blade is the least of your troubles since it has lots of spells.
Nor can I agree to an objection to improve a spell so its *useful* just because there is a fear that when the enemy uses the spell now it'll suddenly be dangerous to certain characters that may be unable to kill a single wizard in combat.

Tell me how you want it set up, and I could probably do it myself for you even.

This is strange. I'm reading the code for the spell, and it looks like it should have DR 5.
Also says it's a magic weapon.

I just cast it with my avatar. I ended up with a +10 dagger, and 25/+1 soak damage. I spawned stuff to attack it, and it soaked up a storm.
I'm not sure what the issue is here.

All I know, and I just double checked this, is that Sewer Rats and Scrawny Rats both can hurt the dagger for one damage.

I think I found the problem in the bioware code. They messed up on the duration of the spell, and the dagger was set to last a different duration than the enchantments on it. Should be fixed next reset.

Maybe that bioware code wasn't messed up but was intentional? So that at some point a character that couldn't get past the 25/+1 DR would have a chance to be able to kill it when the DR wore off.
It was probably done to make the game easier for players new to the Forgotten Realms/ D&D world.

Knowing Bioware, I bet it was just a bug. >_>
Such things happen!
Anyhow, looks like this is closed.
